South Africa is divided into nine provinces: Eastern Cape, Free State, Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga, Northern Cape, Northern Province, North-West and Western Cape. The largest city is Johannesburg, City of Gold.

Climate
The average termperature range over most of the country remains comfortable. The coastal climate ranges from Mediterranean in the Cape coastal belt, mild all year round, to subtropical in KwaZulu-Natal. A high inland plateau gives much of the interior a bracing and sunny climate. The average daily hours of sunshine are among the highest in the world (8,5 hours). Midwinter falls in June and July; midsummer in December and January.

Size, population and languages
South Africa covers an area of 1 127 000 square km (about 1/8 the size of USA and nearly 5 times the size of the UK). It is home to a population of an estimated 43 million, encompanssing a rare diversity of cultures, religions, lifestyles and languages. It has 11 official languages. Of these, English is spoken throughout the country.

Time differences
Throughout the year, Standard Time in South Africa is 2 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, making it 1 hour ahead of Central European Winter Time and 7 hours in advance of Eastern Standard Winter Time.

The currency in South Africa is the Rand.

Medical requirements:
The Kruger National Park is in a malaria area and it is necessary to consult your Doctor regarding a prophylaxis. Citronella Oil based insect repellants are a natural form of protection and are provided on our tours.

Clothing:
On Safari, casual and comfortable clothing is advised, i.e. shorts, tracksuits, casual trousers, t-shirts, loose skirts, etc. Warmer clothes for the evenings and especially a jacket for night drives, particularly if visiting in winter months.
