| This fella about a foot long (300mm) was trying to cross the road in front of me. This was the second one I'd seen, but this one was in a poisition for me to be able to stop and get him to pose for me. A bit like the spiney anteater, they eat termites and ants. Echidna's are an unusual mammal. Apart from the Platypus, it is the only other egg laying mammal. It lays eggs and suckles it's young. The eggs are put in a pouch waiting to hatch, which takes about 10 days. It then suckles milk from the pores of two milk patches (no nipples). This fella was quite happy moving along the rain gully at the side of the road, after I'd chased him off the tarmac. They aren't spotted all that often, but are not considered threatened. Ok, quiz time. A baby Echidna is called :- A) A Gruggle. B) A Spruggle. C) A Muggle (shades of Harry Potter here). D) A puggle. No fair cheating and looking it up before you guess. You will find the answer if you click <HERE>. |
