Manly Push Bike Ride 18/01/2005
Theres a place in Sydney (north shore) called Manly. Just before you get there is a bridge you go over (O.K. ....depending which was you go), called the 'Spit Bridge'. I wondered one day, if it were possible to go from the Spit Bridge to Manly, by following the foreshore. I looked it up and there was a walking track, so I then put it on my To do list.

Today I finally got to do it.

Yesterday was pissing down with rain and I thought it would have to be scrubbed. I slept in a bit until 6:30 (Yes... that's sleeping in for me!) and when I finally dragged my carcase out of bed, the sun was up and it was a good day.

I caught a bit of peak hour traffic heading for the Spit, but wasn't in any hurry, so that didn't really matter. When I got to the Spit Bridge, I did a ride around the park to limber the legs up a bit and then rode across the bridge itself.
There was a sign saying 'Push Bikes to Manly' and another saying 'Walking Track Only, No Push Bikes Allowed'.
"Hmmm.... decisions decisions...."
Guess which one I took???

I had to carry the bike up and down a few flights of stairs, but thats all par for the course. You have to put it in to get it out, dont you?
It was a nice way to go, through some sub tropical forest, along beaches etc. The council had put in some rickety bridges but they held up. On the road parts, some of the hills were a killer, but I made it up most of them.

About half way I found a park with a little Cafe in it and stopped for a de-caf and a muffin.
The mums were arriving in droves in their 4X4's, BMWs and Volvos. All with a parcel of kids in the back, to go and play in the swing park.

It always makes me smile, when I see the cars that some of these women drive. I can always imagine the husband working like a dog, all hours of the day and night, in some executive position.
Mum stays at home, cleans house and looks after the kids.
He comes home and says Oh yeahhh... lets buy a big 4X4. Ill take the company car to work (or the train) and you can drive around in this great (big lumbering off road) machine (that ultimately will never see a bush track in its life).
Yes dear She says, knowing that she doesnt have much choice and wondering how she is going to ever park the bloody thing in suburban Sydney.
Men...... arent we great???

The other end of the scale is the Volvo guy. He thinks to himself.... Well shes a shit driver, might as well get the safest thing on the road for her and the kids

Then we come to the BMW driving woman, now she has a bit of pull.
She knows the power she has and probably put sex on the line for her shiny new BMW sex machine. He's happy'ish because she's happy and he can go back to work.
Theres something about a woman in a BMW isnt there??
It was probably him this time, that was saying Yes dear (Disgusting wimp).

Either way, none of these woman could drive for toffees in this great big empty car park.
I nearly got wiped out whilst leaving.
Use your indicators you silly cow!!!
Wobble wobble....... Pedal pedal....

I stopped at all the lookouts and admired the views over the harbour, and then went on to Manly. After a ride along the beach, perving at all the talent sunning themselves (the women weren't bad either!! (joking)), I Found a take-away shop and spoilt myself with a hamburger and chips for lunch.
Nice beach Manly, great on a P/B. You can go right along the front, on both the inland and the sea side. One side has the waves crashing in and the other is nice and calm.

My little white legs with knobbly knees were getting a bit sun burnt by this time, so after lunch I headed back to the car by the road. To those that know it... Yes I did push the bike up the hill leading out of manly. Not a hope that I could ride up that one.

On the way home I stopped off in the Honda dealer and had a look at the Honda ST1300 (motor bike) again (drool drool). Hopefully when all this kitchen and floor saga is over, I might be able to save some money and buy one.
The harbour at the Spit Bridge.
Looking out to the Heads (exit from Sydney Harbour), from the Spit Bridge.
From one of the lookouts (Arabanoo look out). The bit on the left, sticking into the water, is the Manly Ferry Terminal. This is the inland side of Manly. Over the back behind that, is the sea side of Manly. Its only a three or four minute walk from one side to the other.
I hope you are paying attention, I'm going to test you later!!
From the same lookout, but a bit to the right this time. Thats North Head and the exit to the ocean, from Sydney Harbour.
Further to the right again, showing both North and South Head.
More to the right, looking down the Harbour. The guys in the boat at the front, were catching Squid for bait.
Who was Arabanoo? I hear you ask. This tells the story. You have to love the thinking of Governor Phillip don't you? He wanted to communicate with the locals so he kidnaps one!!! The poor bugger then dies of Smallpox, which he caught off the white man.  Well that would have got my attention!! The white man would be the last person I'd trust after that.
Manly sea front.
Now the beach has waves... so, I'm on what side????
Yes...... thats right.... it's the sea side!!
