Well hellooooo......
Yes I made it back in one piece. Up at 4am and off to Steves place to be there at 5am. Off we went (half awake... (cough, fart, scratch...as men of the world do at that time of the day.)) and arrived at the Blue Mountains at about 6:10. By 6:20 we were on our way down the Golden Staircase. This is a 260 metre drop and resembles nothing like a staircase. By the time we reached bottom, our legs were burning and literally shaking from the strain of holding ourselves back. Along the bottom is a track called The Federal Pass, which we made our way along on wobbly rubbery legs. About half way towards the ruined castle, we stopped for breakfast which was peanuts and a banana (its a man thing), and some cordial. The ruined castle is not a castle at all, but a name for a rock formation. This is at the top of what was loosely (literally) called another flight of steps. A decent amount of wheezing and heart racing, and we were finally at the top. We found the castle and decided to climb that, and oh so spectacular views. Vista, Vista, Verdant Vista I waxed lyrically (its a family thing!!). Huh? Wot? Says Steve. Nice green view says I, between wheezes. We sat there for a while sucking in the ambience, and chatting as men do, about the critical things going on in the world......Sex, Women, Sex, and Sex. I tried to bring fishing into it but he was having none of it. You a fag or something? he says.
Back down again (How the hell did we get up here in the first place???), and on the way back we stopped for lunch. This consisted of a chicken and cheese roll (Chicken and cheese????), cheese and crackers, and chocolate.... lots of it!!! He brought chocolate, I brought chocolate and we scoffed the lot. All the weight was now in my stomach, and not in my backpack. Climbing the staircase was no easier than coming down, and I burped and farted all the way up (putt, putt, putt....).
After a rest at the top we drove to the scenic railway. Unbeknown to us, last year they had installed the Sceniscender (Da, da, da, dummmm.... Ooooo...). This looked absolutely brilliant, and like two schoolkids we skipped off holding hands to buy our tickets. See then link below about the scenic railway and sceniscender.
Down the bottom there is over 2 kilometres of board walk. Brilliant, we did most of it and then came up via the Scenic railway. After that we were pretty well done for, and it was back home for a rest. Its a bike ride next and then another bushwalk.
