Amish Liturgy


One person is placed in charge of horses.
Church-owned benches are brought to the house-church using a bench cart.

Bishop and preachers gather in a room to decide on the two preachers for the day.

The service starts at around 8:00am. The service lasts more than 3 hours.  The attendance is up to 150 people.

- Hymns (for half an hour.   2nd hymn: always Ausbund #131)

- 1st sermon (30 minutes; sermons may be chanted in sing-song style; topics may come from Old or New Testament)

- Scripture reading (usually from Matthew; at the end of the year, usually from Luke and John)

- Silent Prayer (the people kneel)

- Main Sermon (up to or more than 1 hour; sermon may be chanted in sing-song style; the preacher may walk to and fro to different rooms where congregants are sitting)

- Prayer & Singing (half an hour)

- Pre-Lunch silent prayer

- Light Lunch (coffee, bread, peanut butter & marshmallow, jam, apple butter, red beets, pickles, cheese, snitz (dried apple pie)

- Post-Lunch silent prayer

- Socializing time (people usually socialize into the afternoon)
