The Sandbox

Between my toes
Slip those simple grains
That once held
So much happiness.

I remember a summer
That has long since passed
Yet still lives and breathes
Within my worn soul.

I remember old friends
Whose last names have
Been easily forgotten,
But whose faces I still see.

I remember days spent
Toiling in the sand box
When we built the castle
With the big moat.

We may have gotten
A good reprimand for
Using the hose, but
At least we had the castle.

Time cannot be erased
But I wouldn't want it to.
Our priceless days
Should live as memories now.

I can't long for those days
As my toes dig into the sand.
There's something much better,
Standing right beside me.

With a smile, I turn to you,
Wishing not for the past;
That summer lives in me,
But I'll live in the future

With you.
