Hello All!
Im not sure what everyone wants when they come to this page so I will start with the show grooming
ALWAYS start with a clean dog if you are going to groom.
BATHING:
**Before bathing Remove any bands or wrapping material carefully, line brush your dog to ensure there are no tangles or mats, use a mister bottle(conditioner & water OR detangler) to line brush, if you brush w/out a mister you chance hair breakage.
HAVE EVERYTHING YOU NEED BEFORE BATHING AND GROOMING
never leave your dog in the tub or on the table to go for grooming supplies.**
Use a premium shampoo and conditioner,
the type you use will depend on your dogs coat and skin type.
Wet the dog ,making sure that the hair is wet down to the skin as a poodles hair is very coarse and thick, when you rinse, make sure all soap is gone.
When you condition, depending on what type of coat your dog has, use either a cream rinse or a diluted mixture.
RINSE WELL!!!
Always make sure everything is out of the coat, if you dont then the coat is likely to mat.
If you plan on leaving the conditioner in,
make sure all soap is rinse out or it will mat.
DRYING:
When you dry a show dog, Start with squeezing the water gently out of the coat.
(NEVER TOWEL DRY, meaning using the towel to briskly rub the coat, as will likely to mat.)
If the dog is in the adult show trim, either the English Saddle, Cont. Trim or the HCC always dry the smaller and shorter parts first~ rosettes, tail, poms, they tend to dry faster cause the hair is shorter.. Then you can begin drying the adult pac or main coat.
When you dry any part of your dog that is in a show trim Always dry with a comb, dry up & out.. Up toward the dogs head and out to fluff. You want the dog to look like all one line towards the head and the hair to be as straight as possbile.
If your dog is in the puppy trim for show start with the shortest part first which is where the rosettes would be and the shorter part of the hindquarters then the rest of the dog remembering that you must make it all come together and look like its all one line going to the top of the head.
TRIMMING:
Now for the hard part. There are 3 trims that are for the conformation ring:
1. Puppy Trim(full coat)
2. Contential Trim(adult)~ *Rosettes optional*
3. English Saddle
Now the puppy trim depending on how your dog is made, should make the dog high of leg and short of body. The coat must not have any breaks in it. Meaning that when you blend it into the main coat(where the rosettes would be and the main pac) it should be all one line. Then blending the hindquarters into the upper body and making the back legs look like it has lots of angelation. When you make this trim always go into one direction when you trim or the trim will look messy and crisscorssed in the coat.
The underneath should make the dog look like it has excellent rib spring and nice indentation underneath to add to leg height between the last rib and the loin area..
The front should be trimmed in a manner to make the dog look deep chested and having a nice flowing neckline. You can hide little flaws just in the way you trim the dog.
Contential Trim:
This trim has little to hide, but there are little ways to hide certain things.. To start with measure your dog and make sure he is nice and square. If he/she isnt square then you need to make the adjustments with the rosettes to give that allusion.
The blade that you use will depend on what you are comfortable using and also depends on how sensitive your dogs skin is..
Use either a # 40 blade or a # 50 blade for the body and use a # 30 or #40 for the private parts(IMO) as those parts may be more sensitive to being cut to close.
Most pros use a #50 all over including the underbelly 2 days before the show to let just enough hair grow in to give a velvety look to the dog. That way also you can give the dog time to adjust to the closeness of the trim.
ENGLISH SADDLE:
The English Saddle is harder to describe as I am limited in this
cause its not a popular trim in my area.
The English Saddle is a full body trim, almost like the Puppy Trim. The difference is that on the rear quarters its shaved into sections out of the full puppy coat..
The First Section on the hindquarters is shaved straight just underneath tha anal area.
The second area is shaved in at an angle(about 45 degrees) how big of a pom depends on how big your dog is..
The third area is above the hock as if you would making a pom on the back ankles also at a 45 degree angle.
Shape accordingly. Told you I was limited in this trim! LOL If you should have any questions on this trim please email me and I can give you more specific info from the latest Shirley Kalstone Book.
PET TRIMS:
The same as above, choose the correct shampoo according to your dogs coat & skin type. **NEVER LEAVE YOUR DOG IN A TUB OR GROOMING TABLE UNATTENDED!!!** Always have everything you need before bathing & grooming.
As with the show trims wet your pooch down to the skin. Apply your shampoo & rinse well Apply your conditioner, you may either rinse well or for really coarse hair rinse lightly to leave some in.
Gently squeeze the water out of the coat. Depending on the length and the type of trim, dry accordingly.
TRIMMING:
Now For some of theThe Pet Clips
1. Puppy Clip
2. Sporting Clip
3. Summer Miami Clip
Puppy Clip:
The Pet Puppy is a lot like the Show Puppy accept for the blades. You can use a #15-30 blade for pet OR you can use the show blades, depending on how sensivitve your dogs skin is. But the difference is that everything is shorter for the convience of the pet owner.
Sporting Clip:
The Sporting Clip is mush like a Puppy Clip but a shorter version of it. Clip the face, feet and tail with the approciate blade. You may also use blades or comb attachments to do this trim how short or long you want the coat will depend on the blades you use.
The Summer Miami Clip:
This is my fav. Pet clip !!! The Summer Miami Clip is perfect for hot weather. Shave the dog with either a #8 blade #9 blade, or # 10 blade, leaving the cuffs or poms on the feet and leaving the topknot and tail fluffy.
If any one has any more detailed questions please feel free to email me and I can answer them in a more detailed fashion, these clips are only done in over view to give you an idea what these trim entail!
HAPPY TRIMMING!!!
