Wednesday 15th March
It began with lifesavers rowing boats along the Yarra river towards great lighted fish. The MCG was lit up "like a giant sapphire" (Ray's words)
Out of the sky came a flying tram with giant paper wings. People streamed out of the train "ordinary Melbourne people"
Three flags were then raised England (Manchester 2002) Australia
(Melbourne 2006) and India (New Delhi 2010).
The dignitaries then arrived.......... the host Ronald Walker with
Prince Edward, Steve Bracks (Premier of Victoria), John Howard (Prime
Minister).
Then the arrival of the Queen and the singing of the national
Anthem "Advance Australia Fair".
Now for the show.......
A duck appears on
wheels and moves towards a boy -This is adapted from a poem written by Michael
Leunig
The duck disappears in the fog and is replaced by a woman with wings
.The woman flies into the air followed by the boy on a skateboard
The boy
lands on top of a spire and waves to someone to rescue him. Some koalas start
appearing carrying ladders they are trying to rescue the boy
Koalas go past
on a flying thong. The boy jumps off the spire and goes after a while (thank
goodness!)
There is an aboriginal segment with a young woman in a flying
canoe. The boy appears again
Aboriginal women in a circle in possum skin
cloaks (imported from New Zealand)
The young aboriginal women passes the boy
a large white ball symbolizing passing of knowledge.
First band plays "The
Church" with "Under the Milky Way" A ballet girl appears followed by lots of
ballet dancers
Then a motorbike appears????????? Followed by lots of
motorbikes
The ballerinas become stars (ho hum) The motorbike circles a lone
ballerina (symbolizing I don't the hell what)
The ballerinas (stars) in the
sky holding flares or firecrackers. That boy with the 'bloody' duck comes back
this time the duck is real. (maybe there will be a cookup?)
No Ray assures
the viewers that the duck will be alright. More music from "The Cat
Empire"
Now the athletes arrive from the 71 countries Europe first with
England leading the way Scotland wearing tartans Africa next (heaps of
countries)
meanwhile the Queen's baton is being handed around to each of the
AFL Captains
More countries......
Australia at last with Jane Saville
carrying the flag
David Neitz (Captain - Melbourne Football Club) hands the
baton to Ron Barrassi (football legend)
Ronnie baby walks through some water
then up some stairs and hands the baton off to Herb Elliott Go Herbie!
The
Commonwealth flag is brought in (getting hard to stay awake now) The camera pans
onto the Queen who is fast asleep
Adam Pine reads the athletes oath .Harry (a
red haired "no friends" boy) reads a message to the Queen (who is awake
now)
Dame keeri-something or rather sings happy birthday to the Queen
......The Queen stands
The president of the Commonwealth Games has his say
(or rather gives a long boring speech) .........Its finally
finished!
The Queens baton (or aluminium stick) is brought in by Cathy
Freeman who then hands it to Ron Clarke (69)
Marjorie Jackson "The Lithgow
Flash" has the baton now and isnt she quick
John Landy (75) now has the
'wretched' thing and starts to climb some stairs toward the Queen up and up he
goes
The baton is placed near the Queen (not lit like in the Olympics)
The
Queen delivers her message "One Year....." she talks about the 'bloody' baton
blah blah blah. "Tonight we celebrate the value of sport"
Delta goodrem sings
while idiots on rollerblades with flares (again they must have borrowed them
from the ballerinas)
and .........Its all over Yippee! Let the Games
Begin.
