Most of the consonants are pronounced as in English, except that:
The letters H, W, and Y may be used in proper names and words from other languages that have not been completely assimilated into Mediterranean. Note that some of these letters already exist in other alphabets, either naturally or as borrowings to represent missing sounds.
To avoid confusion with existing letters or to add sounds missing in some alphabets, letters (marked in red) have been added to or modified in all three alphabets.
Tonic stress patterns of Mediterranean
Stress normally occurs on the vowel before the last consonant. Occasionally it may also fall on the second vowel before the last consonant or on the last vowel in words ending with a vowel. The following exemples illustrate all the possible accentuations and use an acute accent to show tonic stress:
Plural endings do not alter the original stress of singular, but verbal desinences do force, and occasionally even require, tonic shifts:
