Duo is an orphan. He lived on the streets of L2 stealing to survive. In AC 187 he met Father Maxwell. The catholic priest took him to an orphanage - Maxwell Church - he was [eading] together with Sister Helen. Duo was never adopted, so he stayed in the orphanage couple of years until it was burned down by Alliance sodiers. Duo was the only survivor of the Maxwell Church Tragedy.
Thought living a couple of years with Father Maxwell and Sister Helen, Duo doesn't believe in God. Because he witnessed so many deaths, the only god he accepts is the God of Death. The cross Duo is wearing around his neck is in memory of Sister Helen and Father Maxwell.
In AC 192, while trying to escape from L2 on board of the Sweeper's Ship, Duo is captured by Dr. G. The scientist is impressed by Duo's skills and involved the boy in Operation Meteor. He tells Duo to steal Gundam Deathscythe. Duo then goes to Earth - as the God of Death - to fight the Alliance.
