Looking for a sweet, soothing tale to waft you toward dreamland?
Look somewhere else.
My first exposure to fairy tales, was the bland Disney variety, in all their spun sugar color and glib musical glory.
That was until one summer afternoon, when my Aunt B sat down with me and handed me a book, opened to a particular story. The Book was by the Brothers Grimm and the story was Cinderella.
This version dripped in the blood of hacked toes and heels and raw ambition. This wide-eyed little girl was absolutely enthralled! I even remember the poem...the chant, which I include in this introduction, because it is different than any of the translations, offered.

The purpose of myth is to touch and teach. They are a buried seed of the human collective. They blend spirit and lessons. They are about truths and life, in all it's complexities, even when it's a little grim.
Wilhelm Grimm, February 24th, 1786

Photographer of the Week
The thread that led from the brothers Grimm wound around to Anne Sexton and this led to a wonderful portrait of her, taken by Gwendolyn Stewart.
