The Man in the Iron Mask
On, November 19, 1703, a masked man, prisoner, number 64389000, held in the Bastille in Paris died. His true identity was the cause of much intrigue, and his story became the basis of literary works by Franois Voltaire and Alexandre Dumas. "The Man in the Iron Mask" remains one of the most tantalizing enigmas of history and also one of the most potentially tragic figures of all time. His story will never cease to fascinate and inspire since he, rightly or wrongly, stands for all the silent victims of tyranny, wherever and whenever they are kept hidden by merciless rulers.

The Masked Man in the Bastille
Alexandre Dumas
Franois Voltaire
While we regret that we did not find a free e-text of Voltaire's Du Siecle de Louis XV, we did find the story of Voltaire, himself to be fascinating.
