If vampires are Don Juans of the horror genre, with their seductive finesse, were-wolves are the personification of pure, raw sexual energy! These are tales of transformation, which allow the character to leave all inhibitions folded in the discarded skin of convention, and free the being to persue his/her lusts with reckless abandon. The lycanthrope has come to embody the beast within us
This is Halloween, and our emphasis is sexual themes in horror, but as is often the case, Post-Christian literature tended to demonize shape-shifting, emphasizing the fear of unchecked libido, whereas in native mythology this familial link with animals is part of the natural world. In the natural world animals are teachers, guides and partners and native people trust their own nature, rather than fearing it.
