Comments: Author's Notes: I wrote this with T/R in mind, though there's nothing explicitly slashy about it, so I classified it as gen. This was intended as a response to a Gershwin song title challenge. But I'm not very good at coloring within the lines. So this is Gershwin, but not a song. And, my apologies, but it's a deathfic. Forgive me if you've seen this story before. It was originally posted to the EntSTFic sister list, as it is technically gen and the first two parts of the series stand on their own as well. But I had Tucker/Reed in mind when I wrote it, and it's becoming a series of sorts, which will contain slash. So I wanted to post the earlier parts (this one and the follow-up "Mourning" ) to this list as well, since that's where the slashy parts will need to be posted.

This nebula's a bloody deathtrap.

Silver death lies in ambush within this shimmering interstellar dust bin. I recognize a weapon when I see one.

I recall the rapt gazes of this crew at our first unknown nebula, anxious to name it, befriend it. Wearing innocence like our blue skivvies, unashamed of being seen publicly in either. Commander Tucker perhaps most naive of all, the most filled with wonder.

The wonder died with the attack on Shuttlepod Two. He'd insisted on leading that mission. I hope he's found his peace.

I'll say this much for death. It has a lovely facade.
