Sparkling lights, a makeshift tree, champagne bubbles tickle as they go down, too quickly maybe, before I lose my nerve

I hear laughter, effervescent as the wine, swirling around the man who holds my heart but hasn't seen that in my eyes.

Exchange of gifts--thank-you hugs, casual kisses. One last present offered shyly. No wrapping, no ribbons. It holds only my hope.

Gathering my courage and the man, I kiss him gently. Green eyes meet storm-gray, exchanging silent promises. Later.

In quiet darkness, two at last alone together.

All distance breached. Hearts given and accepted.
