Some things you might want to know.....
What are Mr. Delaney's
classes like?
My classes are organized in learning teams of 3-4 students. Instruction
is delivered in three ways: 1) By direct instruction....the teacher will
explain new material and answer student questions, 2) by collaborative
team
work.....students explore, discuss and help each other during class
time, and 3) individual reading and practice. You may see detailed descriptions
of each day by visiting either Geometry
or
Algebra 2.
What is the homework?
There is an assignment nearly every block day
in our classes. I check assignments every block day for completeness and
quality of work. They are worth a total of 3 points each: 2 points
for 100% of the work attempted (or 1 point for at least 50%) and 1 point
for quality of work. There is usually a "teamwork" component done
in class with their collaborative learning team....this can be an exploration,
"talk it over" or a lab situation....and an out-of-class component. For
daily details, go to Geometry or
Algebra
2.
What is the makeup policy?
Whenever a student is absent from class, they have 5 school days to
makeup any work that they missed. Extensions are always available for special
situations.
What is the content taught
in Algebra 2/Geometry?
Both courses satisfy high school mathematics requirements for admission
to the University of California and the California State University systems.
To see the standards which are addressed in both classes, visit the California
State Algebra 2 or Geometry
standards. We use the wonderful book "Discovering Geometry" (1993 edition)
by Michael Serra for geometry and "Merrill: Algebra 2" (1986 edition)
in our Algebra 2 course. You can purchase used copies of these online at
Follett
and other used textbook sites.
How can I help my child?
Encourage and support them. Try to have a quiet place available for
them to study. Make sure that they have all the physical things needed
to study math....graph paper, scientific calculator (or better yet, a graphing
calculator like the TI-83+), protractor, cm ruler and plenty of pencils
in several colors. If you have a computer at home, consider investing in
any of the many CDs available in mathematics. You can also find more information
on my "Helpful Math Sites" web page.
How can I find out their
current academic grade?
I post every student's grade online about every 3 weeks. You simply
go to the webpage "Grade Info" and follow
directions. You can also reach me after 2:10 PM by dialing 378-1500 ext.
6251. I can also e-mail grades to you if you provide me with the book number
in your child's text..... [email protected]
What if my child is having
a problem in the class?
First, encourage them to TALK to me....I am available daily in room
51 before school from 7:50 - 8:20. If this is not convenient, have them
make an appointment with me during class and I will make every effort to
see them during lunch or after school. If it is a serious matter that you
wish me to be aware of, either call 378-1500 ext. 6251 after 2:10 PM or
email me at [email protected]
I check my email daily and will make every effort to get back to you ASAP.
