Algebra II

Standard
8. Students solve and graph quadratic
equations by factoring, completing
the square, or using the quadratic
formula. Students apply these
techniques in solving word
problems. They also solve quadratic
equations in the complex number
system.

Skills (Note: none listed for science standards)

Teacher Strategy
Ask students to graph y =(x –1)(x+2).Ask them to choose representative values of x and y.After they graph it,discuss if it ’s linear or non-linear and what key points they can use when graphing.Discuss the vertex and symmetry of problems.

Do a variety of problems involving factoring where students determine the two factors.Be consistent in showing factoring even if the polynominal might be the difference of two squares, perfect square or trinominal.

Introduce the quadratic formula and ask them to graph both real roots and imaginary roots. This is a good time to review complex numbers and imaginary solutions and graphing.

Review perfect squares and have students determine x by completing the square.

Teach students how to solve problems involving length, width and area using either the quadratic formula or completing the square.

Student Tasks or Scientific Investigation/Experimentation

Have students write an explanation ot the process of solving a quadratic equation using the quadratic formula.

Give students quadratic equations which are not in standard form and have them use the quadratic formula to determine the solution.

Assign group problems where the length, width or area are increased/decreased and have students determine the new dimensions.

Assessment or Scientific Application/Assessment
Have the students solve a quadratic equation
with real solutions and also have them graph the
equations.

Have them also solve and graph quadratic
equations with imaginary solutions.

Pose various word problems that involve length,
width,area,projectile motion,and falling
objects,and have students solve them.
