Algebra II
Standard
7. Students add, subtract, multiply,
divide, reduce and evaluate rational
expressions with monomial and
polynomial denominators, and
simplify complicated fractions
including fractions with negative
exponents in the denominator.
Skills (Note: none listed for science standards)
Teacher Strategy
Review adding and subtracting fractions with arithmetic examples so students remember about finding the least common multiple (LCM)and equivalent fractions. After going over factoring have students add and subtract fractional expressions with unlike denominations.Be sure to point out how signs change when subtraction is involved.
Again review multiplication and division with arithmetic examples.Show how LCM does not enter multiplication or division.Show students how to reduce fractions.Be sure to point out that the expression

Review exponents and the rules of powers, division and multiplication.Show how monomials differ from binomials and trinomials when reducing fractions.
Student Tasks or Scientific Investigation/Experimentation
Have students do problems reviewing factoring. Given a problem with addition or subtraction of
natural expressions,have students write step-by-
step what occurred in words.Repeat the same directions with multiplication
and division.Have students explore complex rational
expressions where the main fractional bar can
be considered as a division sign.
Assessment or Scientific Application/Assessment
Have students simplify various fractional
expressions that involve factoring,reducing and
the operations of addition,subtraction,
multiplication and division.Be sure to mix
binomial and trinomial expressions with
monomials.
