Give three examples each where it would be more practical to use sigma notation and where it would not (where the general sum formula would be more practical.)Also, define practical as you are using it. Write and explain two examples each of a finite and an infinite geometric series;include the application of each in your explanation. (Application example:the total distance that a pendulum travels as it swings would be an application of an infinite geometric series.)
Resources and Technology
Resource:The story,The Pit and the Pendulum by Edgar Allan Poe,might be a stimulus to investigate infinite geometric series;there are several, related mathematics activities with pendulums. Any pre-calculus or calculus book will provide additional information on summation formulas.
Technology:Measurement in Motion by Learning in Motion (CD-ROM,Floppy disk, Online Learning Experience)is rated Exemplary by the California Technology Instructional Clearinghouse.Visit this program at http://www.learn.motion.com for a glimpse of the scope of their programs. As a demonstration tool,Measurement in Motion allows a teacher to capture and measure phenomena not visible to the naked eye. Teachers can use their own video camera with the Quicktime component to make video clips for demonstrations.
