The California Mathematics Content Standards -Grade8 9 10 11 12
Algebra II

Standard
20. Students know the Binomial
Theorem and use it to expand
binomial expressions which are
raised to positive integer powers.

Skills (Note: none listed for science standards)

Teacher Strategy
Use Pascal ’s triangle to explain that there is a pattern to the coefficients. The coefficients form a pattern that is often displayed in a triangular formation. This is known as Pascal ’s Triangle where each new row is formed by starting and ending with one. Then each coefficient is the sum of the pair of coefficients above it in the previous row.

Student Tasks or Scientific Investigation/Experimentation
Have the students find the term in (x +2)7 which contains x5

Have the students find the 8th term of (x +y)12

Find the fifth term of (x +2y)10

Find the term containing b4 in (a+b)9

Have studenst expand (x2 – 3y)7

Assessment or Scientific Application/Assessment
Find the fourth term of (a – b)15

Find the term that contains b 7 in (a – b)16

Expand (a – 2b)10

Resources and Technology
Resource:Math Motivators!—Investigations in Algebra by Posamentier and Sheridan. Addison -Wesley Publishing Co.,Inc.,1983.

Technology:An interesting and thought- provoking website (http://www.cam.org/~selby/)is authored by Alan M.Selby from Montreal,Canada.Dr.Selby shares his thoughts and theories on-line;these include three volumes titled:Elements of Reason, Three Skills for Algebra;and Why Slopes and More Math. Both teachers and thoughtful students will find mathematical stimulation at Dr.Selby ’s websites.
