Algebra II
Standard
15. Students determine if a specific
algebraic statement involving
rational expressions, radical
expressions, logarithmic or
exponential functions, is sometimes
true, always true, or never true.
Skills (Note: none listed for science standards)
Teacher Strategy
The conditions imposed by the definition of the change of base formula (see Standard #13)will impact the logarithmic function and determine if it is sometimes true, always true,or never true. Zero is the number which can be added to (or subtracted from)another number a without a being altered thereby:a +0 =a.If a number is multiplied by zero, the result is zero:a x 0 =0. Division of a number by zero must be excluded if contradictions in the operation of the basic rules of arithmetic are to be avoided.
Additionally, there are values for some variables in certain expressions or functions that would make the expression or function false.
Student Tasks or Scientific Investigation/Experimentation
Solve, identify, and explain if solutions are always true, sometimes true,or never true.
![]()
In the expressions 4x,•x – 6,,, show solutions for x that are always true and never true.Explain your reasoning for each decision.
Assessment or Scientific Application/Assessment
Give three examples each of expressions that are 1)sometimes true;2)always true;and 3) never true.
Resources and Technology
Resource:Mathematics Assessment:High School Assessment Video Library Package,Produced by WGBH.Published by The Annenberg/CPB Math and Science Collection. This visual guide portrays the assessment standards and purposes, showing classrooms where informal and formal assessments are used. The video helps educators sort through many options and helps teachers see the link between instruction and assessment.(An entire Mathematics Assessment K-12 Library is available.(http://www.learner.org for more details) Technology:Tangible Math:Algebra Animator by LOGAL software,Inc.for 7th-12th grade is rated Desirable by the California Instructional Technology Clearinghouse.(Floppy disk, Macintosh,Windows)Students may examine one-to-one and many-to-one functions; compare and contrast motion defined by a constant, linear, quadratic, cubic, rational, exponential, and logarithmic functions. It is an excellent tool to teach graphing skills, compare various graphs, prepare tables, find points of intersections, and connect graphing and equations to real-life situations and word problems.(This software also supports Standards #13,#24,and #25.)
