The California Mathematics Content Standards -Grade8 9 10 11 12
Algebra II
Standard
13. Students use the definition of
logarithms and the product formula
for logs to translate between
logarithms using any base.

Teacher Strategy
Student Tasks or Scientific Investigation/Experimentation
Have students use their calculators to determine the logs of powers of 10.They should then come up with the rule themselves. Give them an equation such as log4 3 +log4 (y –2)=log 4 2 +log4 y and have then work in groups. They should be able to use the product rule and antilogs to determine the solution.
Assessment or Scientific Application/Assessment
Assess students by having them solve standard problems such as:
Resources and Technology
Resource:A Concise Introduction to the Theory
of Numbers by Alan Baker.Cambridge
University Press.Technology:Tangible MATH:Algebra Animator
by LOGAL Software,Inc.for 7th-12th grade is
rated Desirable by the California Instructional
Technology Clearinghouse.(Floppy Disk,
Macintosh,Windows)Students may examine
one-to-one and many-to-one functions;
compare and contrast motion defined by
constant,linear,quadratic,cubic,rational,
exponential,and logarithmic functions.It is
an excellent tool to teach graphing skills,
compare various graphs,prepare tables,find
points of intersections,and connect graphing
and equations to real-life situations and word
problems.
