Rusty, Norma and 17-yo daughter Matet and left their house in Murrieta, California to spend a 4th of July vacation in Oregon, Washington and Canada. Liza gave them a ride to the San Diego airport to take an afternoon flight to Portland, with a brief stopover in San Francisco. Brando, Rosie and 3-yo daughter Fiona picked up the new arrivals in a rented Toyota Sienna mini-van.
Stopped at the USA-CANADA border's Peace Arch Park. Went around the world-famous Whistler Ski Resort before proceeding to friends' house in Pemberton, two-drive north of Vancouver in the Canadian province of British Columbia, where we stayed overnight after a sumptuous dinner of salmon, shrimp, corn and mashed potatoes. Next day, went to explore the cosmopolitan city of Vancouver. Had lunch at the city of Vancouver's old Chinatown and went sightseeing around Stanley Park, then visited tourist attraction Capilano Suspension Bridge, breathtakingly suspended 450 feet (135m) across and 230 feet (70m) above Capilano River, walked from one giant Douglas fir tree to another via a series of seven elevated hanging bridges, some reaching as high as 100 feet (30m) above the forest floor. Next day, took the Tsawwassen Ferry, south of Vancouver, to the European-looking city of Victoria, the capital of British Columbia, and toured the magnificent Butchart Gardens. From Victoria, BC, Canada, we rode the ferry to Port Angeles, Washington then drove Highway-101 along the eastern coast of Washington state's Olympic peninsula, sightseeing in the pioneer museum and Dungeness Crab Valley and shores of Sequim, eating fresh oysters and clams along the Hood Canal. Explored the elegant chambers in the interior granite structure of the state capitol house in Olympia, Washington. Went to Bremerton and took another ferry to Seattle to have dinner at Seattle's chinatown, checked out the Space Needle before heading home to Portland, Oregon. The next day, visited the Portland's Grotto, or National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother, then drove half an hour eastward to Multnomah Falls, the second highest year-round waterfall in the nation.
