Mariel Gullwhacker - Mariel is a mousemaid who used to be a slave of Gabool, but was tossed into the sea because she supposively tried to kill Gabool. She reached dry land and coincidentally landed near Mossflower and Redwall, then traveled to Redwall and went on a quest to kill Gabool.
Supporting Good Characters:
Dandin the Swordcarrier - Dandin is a mischievious young mouse who becomes Mariel's very good friend and comerade and accompanies her on her quest. He also posesses the spirit of Martin the Warrior.
Tarquin Longleap Woodsorrel - Tarquin is a comical hare who meets Mariel when she gets lost trying to find Redwall and helps her get to the Abbey. Later on, he goes along with her on her quest. He has a huge crush on Honorable Rosemary.
Durry Quill - Durry is a down-to-earth, sensible hedgehog who journeys along with Tarquin, Mariel, and Dandin.
Saxtus - Saxtus is Dandin's best friend. He is a very intelligent and caring mouse who is shocked with the ways of war.
Honorable Rosemary, Colonel Clary, Brigadier Thyme - Honorable Rosemary, Rosie for short, Clary, and Thyme are the hares of the Long Patrol. They saved Mariel when she was attacked by frogs. Later on, they went to Redwall and helped defend it from Graypatch's band of searats, along with save the searat's slaves. Thyme and Clary were slain while saving the slaves, and Rosie was close to being slain.
Joseph the Bellmaker - Joseph is Mariel's father. He was assigned to make a bell for Rawnblade and had finished it but was then captured by Gabool. Gabool took the bell and commanded him to tell him what the signs meant, and when Joseph finally did, he was also tossed into the sea, a few days after Mariel was. He survived and created TAG.
Rawnblade Widestripe - Rawnblade is the Lord of Salamandastron and Gabool is his sworn enemy.
Main Villain(s):
Gabool the Wild - Gabool was the king of all searats and lived in Terramount. He was soon driven mad by the bell that he took. He was killed by his own scorpion.
Supporting Bad Characters:
Graypatch - Graypatch used to be Gabool's close comerade, but then fled from Terramount with a crew and a ship. He found Redwall Abbey and attempted to capture it. After a few attempts, he and the remains of the crew tries to get back to the abandoned ship but were all killed. Graypatch was slain by Oak Tom, a squirrel woodlander.
