*Note: Not yet reviewed, but this is what I was told: Not sure which theatre this was at but most likely the Barbican, before the show moved to the Palace - possibly a preview performance. Not a brilliant recording as it was made in 1985 (amazing recording for that date in my opinion!) with a tape recorder - there is a "stretched-tape" whine/sound/dip in the audio every now and again up until "At The End Of The Day" - it picks up after that and is definitely listenable despite the background hiss. Unfortunately a chunk of the "Confrontation" (the bit from the start to end of the Valjean/Javert duo) is missed out as the first tape needed to be turned over from side A to B. Also when the first tape had to be switched for a second tape a bit of "In My Life" was missed too. Finally, when the second tape needed to be turned over from side A to B, a bit of "Storming The Barricade" was missed. Some beats to songs are missed by actors and other bits were different in the previews - very interesting to see how much it's changed into today's version and of course into the OLC Recording.

Broadway – September 8, 1996

Craig Schulman (Valjean), David Masenheimer (Javert), Susie McMonagle (Fantine), Richard Vida (Thenardier u/s), Gina Ferral (Mme. Thenardier), Ricky Martin (Marius), Christeena Michelle-Riggs (Eponine), Tamra Hayden (Cosette), Gary Mauer (Enjolras), Christopher Trousdale (Gavroche), Kimberly Hannon (Young Cosette)

Noticeable hiss from the analog transfer, but perfectly listenable. Missing a bit of “Attack on Rue Plumet” and possibly other minor things around the flip points. There is an amusing flub in which Michelle-Riggs sings “I did not even know my name” Probably one of Mauer's last as Enjolras right before he joined the Phantom cast in October. I've listened to disk two in its entirety, but not disk one or three yet. I'm already adoring Mauer's Enjolras . . . not very pleased with Martin's Marius. Schulman's Valjean is "okay", and I do like Michelle-Riggs' Eponine so FAR, but I'll reserve final judgement until hearing "On My Own." The Thénardier's in this audio are a riot.

Toronto, Canada, August 29, 1998 – Third National Tour

Cast: Colm Wilkinson, Todd Alan Johnson, Susan Gilmour, J. P. Dougherty, Sharron Mathews, Jessica Snow – Wilson, Tim Howar, Regan Thiel, Kurt Kovalenko, Stephen Bishop

Sound is very low, close to inaudible at times, and I get the feeling it was originally on audio cassette, there's a bit of analog hiss there. The cast was amazing, Wilkinson as always totally becomes Valjean (I much prefer him as Valjean than the Phantom) and Snow – Wilson's Eponine really touched me (My two favorite characters.)

Beautifully clear sound, obviously digital. Oh My Gosh, WHY was Eldred only an UNDERSTUDY? His Valjean blew me out of the water when he sang "Bring Him Home." Kaarina's Eponine remains one of my favorites. Mann is not my favorite Javert.

Les Miserables

Los Angeles, 3NT, May 29, 1999
Cast: Erick Buckley u/s, Todd Alan Johnson, Joan Almedilla, Sutton Foster,

The show itself is pretty well filled, mostly mid-range zooms. It's a little dark and there's some generation lost. Cast wise, very excellent, I've been looking for a video of Johnson as Javert, and he did not disappoint! Foster is an excellent Eponine. Includes bonus footage after the show from the Les Mis Tenth Anniversary Concert (Clips of On My Own, Little Fall Of Rain, and Come With Me Finale.)

Quality: B+

Medium: NTSC DVD

Les Miserables
San Diego, Ca, 3NT, October 3, 1999

Cast: Ivan Rutherford, Stephen Bishop, Joan Almedilla, Sutton Foster, Regan Thiel

Quality: A-

Some obstruction at times. Low gen loss but a little dark at times, occasionally due to the lighting there is no picture, but this happens very rarely (think along the lines of what happens in the title scene of POTO?) The cast does an excellent job with the music; I was impressed with Eponine and Valjean's performances. Act one does not fit completely on one disk so the end of act one and all of act two is on the second DVD.

Medium: NTSC VHS – 2 tapes / NTSC DVD – 2 disks / 3 disk VCD set / MPEG Data Disks

A bit grainy and with the beginning of heavy gen loss (snowiness in the picture, surprising for a video of this age) There are some excellent close ups, however.

NTSC VHS – 2 tapes

Les Miserables

Cast: Unknown  see notes.

Quality: B+

Mostly wide shots. This is the student edition video  I've seen it on a few lists. Overall, it's is fairly well performed for being done completely by high school students, but I'm sure there are things that were in the professional stage show that are not in this one  I just don't know Les Mis well enough to say for sure, but it looks to be the complete show as staged.

Les Miserables

London December 11 1999
John Owen-Jones, John Stacey, Gunilla Backman, Tom Lucas, Jaime Farr (u/s), Jane Horn (u/s), Mark Powell (u/s), Cameron Blakely, Joanna Mays
Time to talk about how much I love this video. Filmed from the Orchestra (Stalls) at The Palace Theatre. Great zooms and color, some heads and sometimes the conductor’s hands (although that makes for a cool effect) obstruct sometimes, and the grade is lowered for those reasons. A fantastic video of the show with the most amazing close-ups in any video I’ve ever seen without any pixelation. Ending instrumental bit of IDaD and the last bit in the sewers missing. JOJ is as amazing a Valjean as he is a Phantom and he and Stacey have great chemistry together. Lucas is the best Marius I have ever seen with an astonishing voice, his “Empty Chairs” is utterly heart-breaking. My only gripe is the wig. Farr sings through her nose like nobody’s business and acts like a whiny brat, ugh. Blakely is far too subdued as Thenardier. And the Gavroche is one amazing kid.
