Between the Words

I love you too is what you usually say.
But I wish sometimes youd ask what I
mean when I whisper those words.
So often said by many, but seldom
taken to heart.
3 brief words in just as many syllables.
Yet so much of me lives in the spaces between.

I love you...
...when the wine is bitter and the ink on
love letters begins to fade
...when that romantic serenade is but
a faint echo in the distance
...when the flattering flicker of candles
dims in mornings light
...when time makes each breath a struggle
and the next uncertain
...when the world withdraws its approval
of you, still you reign here in my heart.

I love you...
...here and now exactly as you are
accepting changes as they come
...as I lie in bed  fighting sleep
for just another moment to think of you
...when I crave the salty-sweet taste of passion,
desire will always lead me only to you.
...just when I think this love has reached a summit,
you inspire me to new heights
...every prayer I send up has a wish for you-
safety, serenity and love as glorious as mine
is for you.

I love you...
...patiently, unselfishly and unfailingly,
expecting nothing in return
the way it was created to be
...I would share with you all I have and
risk a thousand times more
...enough to be hopes last champion,
slayer of the most persistent doubt
...enough to go the distance for loves sake,
from here to heavens gate,
to the place where time begins and ends
...on my knees without pride,
mind, body and soul opened wide.

Now and always-
have no doubt it will never change.
If you listen between the words, youll
hear all this and so much more every
time I say I love you.
