Along the Way
I took a long walk along the river today,
made my way, leisurely, under old overhead railways.
I breathed the cool air deeply as the autumn
scenery seduced me...inhaled me.
Magnificent fall foliage lined the path I trod,
like colorful lanterns lit in daylight guiding my steps.
I passed lovers on benches snug in the embrace of one
another, ignorant of my singular intrusion into their world.
My mind's eye snapped shots of them through a jaded lens,
capturing the elusive to gaze upon it later-
the only way I knew to make it last.
Lush and regal trees, these still green,  how they did weep,
slouched downward, tears watering the grass beneath.
Along the way to nowhere I thanked them for
allowing me to believe they wept for me.
