According to the owner of the house she was in front of, Gypsy was attempting to get to the house and it's chickens. However, everytime she started to make a move toward the house, the home owner would fire off his rifle in her direction to keep her distant. When our friends arrived on the scene, Gypsy appeared to be sick or hurt. She would not move or get up on her own. She just laid there. She was lifted into their car and was taken to their home in Keene, TX. That is where Peter and Carolynn met her. Carolynn named her but it was clear that Gypsy and Peter would be fast friends. Living in the college dorm, Peter was not able to take Gypsy but his friends did keep her so he visited often. Later, complications arose in the household and all five (5) dogs in the house were taken to the Keene city pound. The other four dogs, being purebred, found homes easily. But Gypsy was not taken and was soon in danger of having her life ended. Keene's animal control department/shelter was a one-man show. The animal control officer was a friend and agreed to hold off on the euthanasia for a month. At the end of that time, he would be leaving and could not guarantee that the next officer would honor this agreement. So Peter and Carolynn went to the pound and walked Gypsy everyday. After a months time, Carolynn took Gypsy in with her and her roommate in their trailer. Later, Peter found housing off campus and took Gypsy in. Gypsy has been with this family ever since that time. Gypsy received her Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Certification on January 3, 2002. She has no other awards or trophies. Neither does she have a well known, published pedigree. But, to her credit and our privilege, she has been the most loyal and cherished of pets in the Williams' home. Throughout the roller coaster ride that has been the life of this family, Gypsy has been there every step of the way. Many dogs have come and gone...Gypsy remained. She came to us a loner and has become a trusted companion to the humans and a fair teacher/just leader to the animals in our home. Everything that we know about dogs was taught to us by Gypsy. For that, we will be eternally grateful. Goodbye to my first [canine] love. --- PLW |
