Drinks at the Landfall

Despite being a small holding, RedTarn's Landfall is a very prosperous farm. Part of the Sa Tarna grain raised on the farm is used to make ale. The Landfall's bees produce the honey used to make the mead consumed at the Landfall. Trading and raiding account for the rest of the drinks consumed.

  • Mead - the preferred beverage of the northland, made with fermented honey, water and spice, traditionally served in a large animal horn. Made on-site by Perrin himself.
  • Ale - served in tankards or horns, it is one of the two favored drinks of the Torvaldslanders, the other being mead. Also made on-site by the inhabitants of the Landfall.
  • Paga - a strong fermented drink brewed from sa-tarna (pagar-sa-tarna or Pleasure of the Life- Daughter) grain, the favored drink of Gorean men. Purchased or raided for from the south.
  • Tea - Very aromatic tea brewed fresh from Bazi leaves. In the North, Bazi Tea is highly prized, but served less formally as tea is served on Earth, for example. Purchased or raided for from the south.
  • Black Wine - described as a very expensive drink, even in Thentis, where it is grown on the mountain slopes. It is the same as coffee, and the original beans were probably imported from earth. Served steaming hot with creams or sugars as desired or as a thick, bitter brew sipped from tiny cups. Purchased (rarely) or raided for from the south.
  • Ka-la-na - a ruby red wine, fermented from the fruit of the yellow-wood ka-la-na tree, variously described as rich and delicate as well as 'bright, dry, and powerful'. Like the wines of earth the quality of ka-la-na varies from that of a common table wine to premium brands such as the very expensive 'Slave Gardens of Anesidemus' and 'Boleto's Nectar', a medium-grade wine. Ar is particularly noted for it's production of fine ka-la-na. Purchased or raided for from the south.
  • Ta wine - wines from the ta-grape grown on the terraces of Cos. The color is not described, but the grape is purple. In several varieties from dry to sweet. Generally purchased from Perrin's Cosian properties.
  • Water - Water generally collected from rain or snow, both of which are abundant in the North.
  • Milk - Collected from the bosk on the holding and kept stored cold in either the ice shed or, for more immediate use, in the cool room inside the Hall.
  • FireRuby - Sweet red wine fortified with a jolt of sul paga. Made at Perrin's Villa north of Venna, Lykidos, and brought to the Landfall. Kept in bottles in the cool room and generally served in a goblet.
  • Fruit Juice - Juices of assorted fruits are brought north and stored in the ice shed and cool room.

Food at the Landfall

The foods eaten at the Landfall are generally raised or, if a crop, grown in the fields or gardens of the Landfall. The Landfall has bosk and verr, used for both dairy and meat, and tarsks. Some food is traded to the south for, but largely what is eaten is produced right here at the Landfall.

Two meals are generally served at RedTarn's Landfall though the contents of these meals vary on a day to day basis. The first, dagml or "day-meal", was generally eaten in the morning a couple of ahns after the days work started, around the 6th or 7th Ahn. The second meal, nttml or "night meal", was eaten at the end of the day's work, around the 16th or 17th Ahn.

  • Bosk - Roasted over the fire or fried and leftovers cut up into stews. Also dried or smoked to preserve it through the winter.
  • Fish - cooked over the fire or fried. Also salted or smoked or dried to keep through winter. If enough are caught it can be sold to the south in barrels.
  • Verr - Roasted over the fire or fried and leftovers cut up into stews. Also dried or smoked to preserve it through the winter.
  • Tarsk - Roasted over the fire or fried and leftovers cut up into stews. Also dried or smoked to preserve it through the winter.
  • Tabuk & Deer - (Only available after hunts) Roasted over the fire or fried and leftovers cut up into stews. Also dried or smoked to preserve it through the winter.
  • Cheese & Butter - Cheese and butter are made from the milk of the bosk and verr on the Landfall. These can be heavily salted to preserve them for long periods of time if need be. The cheeses could be kept through the winter and the butter could be kept for years if need be.
  • Vegetables - The Jarl of RedTarn's Landfall doesn't much care for vegetables, but he will eat some. Mushrooms (rarely), Beans & Peas, Onions, Peppers and Garlic being chief among those.
  • Bread - Bread of various kinds is made at the Landfall from the grain grown in the Sa Tarna fields. Black bread and normal yellow Sa Tarna bread are both available here as is a flat bread cooked on a griddle.
  • Porridge & Gruel - Porridge is a common breakfast food, not just among the bondmaids but also among the free. The porridge that the free eat is often flavored with fruit or meat as opposed to the bondmaid gruel that is only rarely flavored.

All of the above foods are available at RedTarn's Landfall. Some may already be cooking, others may require cooking if that is what you want. Just ask and find out what is already cooked and see if it is to your liking. Some things, like bread and butter and cheese are always ready, but the meat thats ready varies from day to day.
