The Hatching

Hatching Story by Anne

As surely as the ocean waves pound the shore came the hatching of Bularith and Syrenths great clutch.
The humming began with a calm like that found before the devastation of a tsunami, then grew gradually like water whispering over rocks to the full-fledged roar of a waterfall. This wild natural sound brought the candidates to the sands garbed in robes as white as the foamy crests of waves, fourteen in all.
The first egg shivered, and shattered releasing a crystalline blue hatchling, reminiscent of a clear day over the bay. He moved with serenity, and strolled directly to Janakis. You must be Jnak, for I am Degath. The blue said and the first impression was made. A brilliant green and a full-bodied brown made their appearances. The brown charged across the sands, skidding to a stop near a boy.
Eupe! the brown roared. Jhulsanth! the new rider roared back. In the midst of this, the green chose a girl from the fringes and they slipped out without fanfare.
A dark bronze exploded from hi shell, flaring his wet wings and roaring at the indignity. Iryntesalth! Calm yourself! Kitterick yelled across the sands and the bronzes eyes turned to him. Kteric. the bronze said calmly joining his bond.
Bularith looked smug as the golden egg began to rock ferociously. It still had splatters of green paint gracing the shell, vandalism from an unfound blue firelizard. The tiny queen, unaware of the state of her shell, burst forth, a rare and radiant beauty. Calmly she made her way to the girls gathered together for her convenience. Without warning, she viciously charged, and most of the girls scattered. Quelara flinched, Anique took a step back, but Lela didnt move. Gimuth, she said, what was that all about? Testing them, Lela. Testing. the gold responded.
The scattered girls repositioned themselves among the boys as a blue hatched. He was large, healthy, and proud. He swaggered across the sands. One boy heard something whisper quiet that sounded like I rock? Ibilrok blinked. Irok. He confirmed, touching the dragon. and Prakraith.
A smaller egg hatched, revealing a refreshing apple-green dragonet. She emerged from her shell gracefully and swept across the sands like a seabreeze. Kyllina. she murmured. Croabeth. The girl returned.
The next dragon parted from his shell with a flash like lightning on the water. Harper Sagion mused, and was soon amused to find the bright bronze lounging at his feet. Sing about me, Sio. Write my praises so the world might hear them. Sio laughed long and loud. Vanity suits you well, Beilyaoth.
Another egg rocked sharply, splitting to reveal a dainty green. She floated across the sands, bumping into one boy. He would have been happy to impress her, but she kept moving. Janaki? she said, lost. Where are you? Janaki blinked. Here, Jinnith. The girl said, stepping towards the dragoness.
A large egg split decisively, and revealed a brilliant brown dragon. He knocked against another egg, and it cracked, revealing a blue dragon. The brown walked towards the candidates. The girls moved back -- all but one. Dadremeth. She said, bolder than any other. Anique. the brown said. The crowd gasped. Browns didnt Impress females! In the midst of this excitement, the blue made his choice and they triumphantly left the sands.
Three eggs remained, and their inhabitants fought to get out. Two greens broke free, followed by a brown. One of the greens pranced right over to Larani. Hello Kitteth! she said with a laugh.
The other green stood her ground and glared until the brown chose Danein. Dnein, why is she so mean? The boy was quick to reply. Like rider like dragon Rysendith. Look.
The feisty green marched right up to the last girl. I am Feith, and you are mine! Quelara grinned.
And so the eggs hatched. Bularith and her mate were happy - it was the perfect ending to an incredibly long day.
