| Martha Hix Honors English 9 Mr. Maite June 7, 2002 This year I will leave Honors English class, learning several important skills. One of the most important things I learned this year was learning how to do MLA style format. For some reason this was extremely hard for me, and I really didnt start learning how to do it, until the end of the third quarter. I finally got it, once I sat down a read the site on how to do MLA format. It turned out to be a very important skill to have, especially when writing. Also this year we read Shakespeares Romeo and Juliet, as well has had vocabulary lists. Romeo and Juliet is full of imagery, metaphors, similarities, juxtapositions, themes, and several other literary techniques we have been studying this year. It was really neat reading this play, because of these techniques, plus, its an exciting play. Since the play was written a long time ago, the language is hard to understand. But I got a book that had the original and modified version next to each other, which helped me get the hang of it easier. Also, we had vocabulary list this year, where we were allowed to pick the words. Often when I was reading book, articles, and things, I would write down words that I wondered what they were, and the list would give me an excuse to look it up. I wasnt really even aware of propaganda, until this year. We learned about the different types, like bandwagon, snob appeal, etc., which can be found just about anywhere, especially in the media. I can use my knowledge of propaganda, to see through it, or use it to my advantage. I also learned how to justify my point, using several literary techniques, one of them being Freudism. In Freudism, the authors past helps influence her writing. I found this very neat, but a little difficult to understand. Like rhetorical criticism, another way to look at an authors writing. This year in honors English, I have learned and perfected many skills. I read several books, including Romeo and Juliet, poems, short stories, and essays. I learned how to do MLA format, studied propaganda, and Freudism. Also, I have hundreds of new vocabulary words to use next year. |
