37 - Castillo, Frank
pitcher
Height: 6-1 Weight: 200 lbs. Throws: Right Bats: Right Born: April 1, 1969, El Paso, TX Scouting Report 2000 Season After spending all of 1999 in the minors, journeyman Frank Castillo joined the Blue Jays as a minor league signing and cashed in with a surprisingly effective big league season. Injuries to his right forearm and elbow sidelined him for a month in the second half, yet he won his last nine decisions dating back to June 12. Pitching & Defense Castillo has endured elbow and shoulder difficulties recently, causing a loss of velocity since his earlier days with the Cubs. However, he was able to get his cutter and two-seam fastball up to 89 MPH this season, which helped the rest of his arsenal. Castillo has a decent hook and a good changeup. He also throws a slider, which taxed his elbow again. Batters have difficulty timing him. They tend to overswing, leading to lots of flyballs and a stingy .220 opponent batting average in 2000. Castillo is a good fielder, but his deliberate motion makes him easy to steal against.
