| Celebrating 100 Great Seasons of Baseball! |
| Celebrating 100 Years of Red Sox Baseball Along with Detroit, Chicago, and Cleveland, Boston is only one of four cities to have remained in the American League since its formation in 1901. Known officially as the Boston Americans, and also by the Pilgrims and Somersets by the media, they officially opened their inaugural season on the road in Baltimore on April 26, 1901. They lost that game 10-6, and didn't pick up their first win until an extra inning game in Philadelphia in 10 innings, pitched by Cy Young on April 30. They also won their first game at Huntington Avenue Grounds against Philadelphia 12-4, also won by Cy Young.
