McFarlane Action Figures

McFarlane Toys began it's baseball action figure line in early 2002. Amongst the over 100 different models of Major League Baseball players, there have been 15 figures of players in the Boston Red Sox uniform (that I know of?!). Some are legends and some have moved on to other teams. These figures are handscalped, stand about 6-inches in height and originally cost $15US. Each figure comes with a base/stand.

This little corner of the web was created as a sort of display case of the Red Sox figures available from McFarlane Toys. This is a personal website and not a commerical business... so we do not sell any of these items! For more information on McFarlane Toys, visit spawn.com.

Getting Better! (or Worst?) Since Series 1, the McFarlane figures have been getting better. The latest series gives us more life-like appearances and players faces that actually look "real". I've found that earlier models seemed rough and did not provide much of a resemblance to the player it was trying to depict. In mid-2005 the figures seems to closely resemble their real-life counterpart. But then came the big let-down with the release of the Ted Williams figure. The craftsmanship on the Williams figure was so terrible, it took me over 2 months and sorting over 50 figures to find one worthy of being placed on my shelf. The paint was poorly applied, scuffs/scratches O'plenty and not to mention the fact the figure doesn't resemble our beloved Teddy!! Along side the Curt Schilling figure, this figure is also a poor match up to the real player's face! Then McFarlane threw out a few Ortiz figures in hopes we would forget the Williams disaster. But we're talking about Ted Williams! He's our hero!! The 'Collector's Edition' figure of Ortiz made me laugh. Ortiz appears to be running beyond first base and just lost his helmet. Are they attempt to capitize on the memory of Papi throwing off his helmet in celebration as he approached home plate after launching a homer over the right field wall? And if he is at first base at Fenway, why is he pointed into foul ball terrority? I still have hoped that McFarlane can regain itself and start producing quality figures again. Only time can tell.

Jason's Wish List! Obviously I wish for a better Williams figure, but I would like to see McFarlane create Carl Yastrzemski and Jim Rice figures. A few childhood idols such as Dwight Evans and Wade Boggs (in a Red Sox uniform of course) figures would be nice. I would also like to see a third edition of Curt Schilling, maybe a retake on his first figure.

Is the Clemens figure worth the most? It is the most sought after Red Sox figure and many online auction tend to end around a price of approx. $75. But the most valuable McFarlane figure is the Barry Bonds (MLB Series 5) in a black jersey. Damn Bonds!
