THE FIRST GENERATION
ROGER WILLIAM TAYLOR-----------EMMAFAYE BERNICE MESSER
ROGER WILLIAM TAYLOR was born in Pontiac, Illinois.
Eighth of ten children of Arthur and Nellie Taylor. In 1945 the
family moved to Long Point, Illinois where Roger attended the local
elementary schools, through the sixth grade. In 1952 the
family moved to Murrieta, California. The family resided at various
houses in the Murrieta and Lake Elsinore, California area.
Roger graduated from Elsinore Union High School in 1958. He attended
California Western University (currently called U.S.
International University) from September 1958 through June 1962. On
June 17, 1961, Roger married Emma Messer in
Tijauna, Baja California, Mexico. They have five children, Roger William
Jr., born 9-15-1961 in Hemet, Riverside County,
California; Pamela Kay, born 12-3-1962 in Riverside, Riverside County,
California; Deborah Faye, born 12-11-1963 in
Salem, Oregon; Patricia Ann, born 5-28-1967 in Fontana, California
and Steven Dwayne, born 8-21-1979 in Fresno, Fresno
County, California.
EMMAFAYE BERNICE MESSER was born in Beardstown, Illinois. Second of eight children of Creston and Helen Messer. In 1960 Emma, her father, step-mother, Ester (Helen having passed away), three sisters (Barbara, Sharon, Louise), one step-sister (Joyce Nickles), and two brothers (George and Escoe) stopped in Murrieta, California on their way from Oklahoma (where the family had to move) to Oregon. Her older sister Thelma had already wed and was not with the family. A baby brother, Creston Jr. had passed away.
It was not just happenstance that the families met in Murrieta, California.
The Messer and Taylor families had a history together.
The brother of Roger's Mother (John Gallup) was wed to the sister of
Emma's Father (Lola Messer).
Roger and Emma lived in several places during the early years of their
marriage. In 1961 to early 1963 they lived in Murrieta
and Lake Elsinore, California where Roger Jr. and Pamela were born.
They moved to Salem, Oregon during the summer of
1963 where their daughter, Deborah, was born. Early in 1964 the family
moved back to the Lake Elsinore, California area. In
January 1965, Roger started working for the California Department of
Transportation (Caltrans) in San Bernardino, California
where Patricia was born in the neighboring city of Fontana. A promotion
within Roger's job caused the family to move to
Sacramento, California in 1977. In March 1978 the family moved to Fresno,
California, again because of Roger's employment
with Caltrans, where Steven was born.
Roger, Emma and Steven moved to Bakersfield, Kern County, California
in 1990 after Roger accepted employment with the
Kern Council of Governments. The family continues to live there at
the present time (January 2003)

THE THIRD GENERATION
BARNWELL ALEXANDER TAYLOR-------------------ELIZABETH ANN RAITT
BARNWELL ALEXANDER TAYLOR (Used Alexander)
was born in Springfield, Illinois. One of six children of Alexander and
Mary Taylor, a farm family. He grew up in this area. ON 2-21-1877, he married
Elizabeth Ann Raitt. After several years, they moved to the Fort Scott,
Kansas area, where they lived for about 30 years. They had nine children
(John, George, James,
ARTHUR, Archibald, Charles, Norval, Annie
(Cecelia), and Lizzie (Elizabeth)). They tried farming for quite a while,
but reverses resulted in the loss of the farm. Alexander and the boys went
into business operating a mobile sawmill operation all over the area. As
the children grew up, they left to go on their own. Apparently, Alexander
left much to be desired as a husband and father, and with most of the children
now gone, Elizabeth took Lizzie and returned to live with son Archie.
Alexander tried unsuccessfully to arrange a reconciliation. He then
started working around various locations, eventually ending
up near White River, Arkansas. He had developed cancer and it was now
in an advanced stage. His son ARTHUR went to
Arkansas and brought him back to Cullom Illinois, where he passed away
about a week later. He is buried at Payne Cemetery,
Cheoa, Illinois.
ELIZABETH ANN RAITT was born in Arbroath, Forfarshire,
Scotand. One of four or more children of John and Cecilia.
When she was a young girl, the family emigrated to the United States,
settling in the Pontiac, Illinois area as farmers. At age 18,
she married Barnwell. She died at the age of 78, and is buried
next to her husband in Cheoa.

THE FOURTH GENERATION
ALEXANDER TAYLOR------------MARY FRANCES COTHRAN
ALEXANDER TAYLOR was born in Fayette, Lexington
County, Kentucky, oldest child of William and Mary Ann Taylor.
His family relocated to Morgan County Illinois, about 1828. On 12-5-1848,
he married Mary of Scott County Illinois
(Winchester). The couple settled near Springfield where they established
a farm. They had six children (Pauline Isabel, Lenora,
Mary Ann, William, BARNWELL ALEXANDER and Mildred Amy. Alexander enlisted
in Company K, 14th Illinois
Volunteer Infantry on 5-11-1861. He was discharged 7-25-1861 due to
inflammatory rheumatics. He re-enlisted 12-16-1861
in Company F, 61st Illinois Infantry. The unit fought at Pittsburg
Landing (Shiloh) Tennessee. He was discharged 11-10-1862
due to bladder trouble. He returned to farm life. This bladder trouble
continued to plague him until, on 5-14-1887, he was
forced to enter the Soldiers and Sailors Home in Quincy, Illinois where
he died 7-15-1887. He is buried there.
MARY FRANCES COTHRAN was born in Flavanna County
Virginia, daughter of Barnwell Cothran (most old Virginia
records spelled the name as Cawthorn or Cawthran) and Mildred Meddings.
The Conthran family moved to Scott County,
Illinois. Here she met and married Alexander. They continued to live
at the old Taylor farm outside Springfield, Illinois until her
death at age 75. She is buried at the Old Salem Church Cemetery, west
of Springfield.

JOHN RAITT, JR-----------------CECILIA MONROE CRABB
JOHN RAITT, JR was born in Scotland to John
Raitt, Sr. and Elizabeth Dorward. He married his childhood sweetheart,
Cecilia on 4-8-1857. The family emigrated to the United States in 1863
living first in Peoria, Illinois and then settling on a farm
near Livingston, Illinois. They had 11 children, including ELIZABETH,
John, James, Archie, Margaret, Matilida, Jenny and
Emma. In 1899, they moved to Nebraska, near Rising City. After his
wife's death, John returned to Illinois to live with his
daughter, Jenny Holt, near Waldo until his death at the age of 86.
His body was returned to Nebraska for burial beside his
wife.
CECILIA MONROE CRABB was born at Arbroath,
Forfarshire, Scotland. The daughter of James and Cecilia Monroe. She died
at the age of 84 and was buried near Rising City, Nebraska.
THE FIFTH GENERATION
WILLIAM TAYLOR------------MARY ANN RAGAN
WILLIAM TAYLOR was born near Lexington, Kentucky.
The son of (by best belief) William and Hannah Taylor. Census
records for 1810 reflect a family which meets the age and location
categories. He married Mary Ann about 1815 and
produced two sons (ALEXANDER and Spencer), and possibly 2 or 3 daughters
(names not known). The family, together
with her family and his mother, moved to the Jacksonville, Morgan County,
Illinois area about 1828. From this point in time
verifiable records exist concerning William.
MARY ANN RAGAN was born in the same area of
Lexington, Kentucky. The daughter of Spencer Ragan and wife (name
unknown). After the families had relocated in Jacksonville, indications
are that Mary Ann became head of the family, possibly
due to the death of William. This fact became confirmed in that on
10-27-1840 she married Abraham Edward's. No further
records could be found on her life. Son Spencer grew up to become a
well known business man in Jacksonville, the father of
11 children.
BARNWELL A. CAWTHORN-------MILDRED MEDDINGS
BARNWELL A. CAWTHORN is identified as an adult
in Fluvana County, Virginia (near Charlottesville). It must be noted
that at that time, as well as initially in Illinois, the name had other
spellings such as Cawthorn or Cathran. No record was found
of his parentage. The 1830 census finds him with wife Mildred in Fluvana
County with a small daughter. Subsequently the
family moved to the Winchester are of Scott County Illinois. He was
involved in real estate transactions there during the 1830's
and 1840's. By the late 1850's he is listed in Christian County. No
further data is known.
MILDRED MEDDINGS is reflected in records only
in terms of her marriage to Barnwell. Possibly she was the daughter of
a Betsy Meddings listed in the 1830 Census as living close to the Cawthornes
in Fluvanna County, or of Timothy Meddings of
the same county. The 1820 Census lists ham and family as the only Meddings
in the county.
The listing of this generation is based solely on data contained in
the death certificate of John Raitt, Jr., which lists these two as
father and mother in Scotland.
As a matter of further background, data from the Mormon genealogical
records reflect that a William Raitt was born about
1694 in Kinnel, Angus, Scotland (in the same general area as the Crabb
family)-Arbroath, Forfarshire. He was married about
1723 to Margaret Grieg of the same town. Children of this union-Alexander,
John, David and William-could possibly be the
parent or grandparent of John Sr.
James and Cecilia were both born in Forfarshire, Angus Scotland. Parents
unknown. He became a seafaring man and married
later in life at age 35. They had a daughter named after the
mother. No other information known.
******************************************************************************************************************************************************
THE SIXTH GENERATION
WILLIAM TAYLOR (SR)----------HANNAH ????
WILLIAM TAYLOR SR. is listed on the basis of
the 1810 and 1820 Census records of Fayette County, Kentucky. His
family is shown in close proximity to Spencer Ragan, known to be the
father-in-law of the younger William Taylor. William's
wife, Hannah, is shown in the 1820 Census as the head of the household,
presuming the death of William sometime between
1810 and 1820. Indications are that the family consisted of the parents
and eight children-two sons and six daughters. Nothing
further is known of William Sr.
HANNAH was the family head by 1820 with 3 daughters
still at home. It is presumed that these girls married by 1828 when
Hannah accompanied her son and his family to Morgan County, Illinois.
In 1832 Hannah purchased property in Jacksonville,
Illinois. In 1835, she deeded half of the property to Mary Ann Taylor
to hold in trust for grandson Spencer. We discovered
that the property involved in this transaction is currently the site
of the Morgan County Courthouse. Nothing further is known of
Hannah.
************************************************************************************************
This family grouping is included based on the Census records for Fayette
County, Kentucky and Morgan County, Illinois. It is
conjectured, but very likely, that Spencer and his wife were the parents
of Mary Ann Ragan, the wife of William Taylor Jr. The
Ragan's lived close by William and Hannah Taylor in Kentucky. They
showed up in Morgan County, Illinois at the same time
and, the second son of William Taylor Jr. was named Spencer. Nothing
else is known of this family.
