· Redrice Club Championships – sponsored by Stannah

The Annual Redrice Squash Championships were held between 31st March and 9th April. There were a record 103 entries, 25% up on last year. The tournament was split into five graded events (A, B, C, D and E) so players played against other players of a similar standard or of only a few leagues difference. There was also a separate ladies event. There were plate events for all 1st round losers and all competitors received a free T-shirt. The “A” Event was won by Michael Elford, who defeated Stuart Summers 3-2 in the final. The ladies title went to Sue Williams a 3-0 winner against Ros Hursell.

The Junior Redrice Squash Championships (also sponsored by Stannah) were held on Sunday 6th April. The 18 entries were divided into three graded events. All competitors received free T-shirts and medals. Harry Clarke won the “C” Event. George Beare won the “B” Event. The “A” Event winner and this year’s Redrice Junior Champion was Brett Farmer.

· 2003 Points Handicap Tournament
The Redrice Points Handicap Squash Tournament begins shortly. All squash players can enter: Beginners, league players, non-league players and team players. Because of the way Gary handicaps every match everyone has an equal chance of winning. Every round is drawn “afresh” out-of-the-hat similar to the F.A.Cup draw and there are no seedings. The event is spread out over several months and players will be given a “play by” date by which each round has to be played. Notices and entry forms have been published around the Club. The closing date for entries is 6th June but if you pay your entry fee before 31st May it is slightly cheaper and you are entered into a free draw for 3 free squash lessons.

· Age-Group Championships
Last year saw the beginning of yet another annual squash event, the Redrice Age-Group Championships. This year it will be held in June over a four day period between Thursday 19th and Sunday 22nd. There will be separate over 35’s, over 40’s, over 45’s, over 50’s, over 55’s, over 60’s and over 65’s events for men* and for ladies* (*exact number of events will be dependent upon the number of entries received). There will be “A” and “B” Events for each of the age categories. Notices and entry details will be published on the squash notice boards. If you or your company would be interested in sponsoring this event please speak to Gary.

· Summer Social Team Tournament
This new type of tournament begins Wednesday 7th May and continues until Wednesday 11th June. Four teams of 5 players will play against each other over this period. There will be prizes for the winning team players. The teams have been chosen at random and contain players from league 20 to league 1. The emphasis is on the social side. Players will play against others of a similar standard and the match will be followed by a post-match meal. If you are not yet in a team but would like enter please speak to Gary.

· Squash Sponsorship
Would you or your company be interested in sponsoring squash at Redrice? This could take the form of sponsoring a team, a tournament, an individual, etc. Please speak to Gary about the benefits. For example, this could be in the form of publicity within Redrice itself, publicity in the local newspaper from squash articles written regularly by Gary, the sponsor’s name on Tournament T-shirts or on Team T-shirts, etc.

· Team Matches
The Hampshire Squash League has reached the end of its season and it has been an extremely good one for the Redrice Men’s and Ladies teams. Four of the five teams finished third or better in their divisions. The Men’s 1st team, sponsored by Oakwood Shopfitting, finished as runners-up in the Premier Division. This was a highly commendable performance by the first team regulars: Michael Elford, Stuart Summers, Gary Hales, Ray Burke and Adrian Williams. Particularly, following the loss of two key members of the squad, Ginge Whiteman (injury) and Robbie Robinson (army posting) at the very start of the season.

Second team captain, Neil Dyke, steered his team, sponsored by Rappa Fencing, out of relegation trouble as they finished in a safe eighth position in Division 1. This was largely due to team regulars Ben Thornton, Alex Antonius, Tom Burnip and Neil Dyke. Special mention should go to Ben Thornton who played every match of the season at number one string and won thirteen of his eighteen matches. The final match gave them an invaluable 9 points in their 3-2 defeat by Avenue I. Antonius and Glide won 3-1 and 3-2, respectively. Meanwhile Dyke and Burnip went down in straight games. Thornton had one of his rare defeats but this time it was an improved performance as he had lost 3-0 to the same opponent in the first half of the season.

The Redrice Men’s 3rd team eventually finished third in Division 3A. A top two place and promotion looked extremely likely until number one string Adrian Williams was promoted on a permanent basis to the 1st team. Steve Reeves and Sue Williams were ever present and played over 90% of the matches. Then, no fewer than fifteen other players represented the team, sponsored by Squash Court Plastering Services, during the season. The last match of the season produced a 3-2 win at Lee V. Reeves, Matt Aldridge and David Williams all winning. There was a rare defeat for Sue Williams at number two string and team debutante Ben Clubley was defeated in three games.

Team captain Jillian Hall led the Ladies 1st Team, sponsored by Oakwood Shopfitting, to their highest ever position, third, in the top Hampshire Ladies Division. Sue Williams, Ros Hursell, Debbie Smith, Jillian Hall and Karen Sturgess secured this position with victory in the final match of the season a 4-1 success away at Avenue I.

The season is not yet over for the Ladies 2nd team who finished third in Division 3. They now know their opponents in the play-off match, which could give them promotion, will be Portsmouth Squash. The team finished third from bottom of Division 2 and have home advantage in the one-off match. Team captain Angela Riggs will lead the team, sponsored by Melting Pot, which will include Sally Biles, Lori Channon, Jenny Matthias and Sally Moore.

The Hampshire Junior League Season has also come to an end. The 1st team, sponsored by Weyhill Timber Products, played in Division I, but the league was disrupted by the withdrawal of two teams at the start of the season. The 2nd team, sponsored by MRT Castings, finished a creditable third. The squad of junior players used in both teams included: Dean Felkler, James Burke, Brett Farmer, Tom Rawnson, Matt Dyke, Nick Barrow, Tom Farmer, Sean Lutz, Todd O’Malley, Zachery Lutz, Andrew Dyke and Sam Stannah.

· Daytime Squash
If you can play at off-peak times, i.e. mornings, lunch-times or early afternoons between Monday and Friday and would like to play others who are available to play at one or more of these times place your details on the list on the squash notice board. There are a surprisingly large number of squash players of all standards from team players down to league 20 players who are able to play at these times. This is a good opportunity to make contact with those people who are of a similar standard. Gary will leave the list of names on the notice board and periodically printout a copy which can be taken away.
