HALES WINS NATIONAL OVER 40’S TITLE
Redrice’s Professional Squash Coach Gary Hales has won the Welsh men’s over 40’s title at the first time of trying. The Welsh Masters Tournament, held each year in Swansea, hosts all the age-group events from over 35’s to over 60’s. The top-seeded Hales defeated Mark Osland (Cardiff) 9/0 9/0 9/5 in the semi-final. In the final he defeated second seed Mark Thomas (St.Melyd) 9/7 9/7 9/3. This victory ensures he will lead the Wales over 40’s team in the forthcoming Home Internationals being held in Nottingham at the end of May. Hales is also in preparations for the World Masters Tournament to be held in Finland in August. Also, travelling to Helsinki will be fellow Redrice player Sue Williams, who like Hales has moved up into the over 40’s category this time. In Melbourne, two years back, Williams finished 6th in the Ladies over 35’s event.
Redrice Men’s 1st Team have finished as runners-up in this seasons Hampshire Premier Division. In the very last match of the season the Oakwood Shopfitting sponsored team lost to title winners Winchester. Adrian Williams (5) narrowly lost 2/9 8/9 9/0 8/10. Stuart Summers (2) and Ray Burke (4) also lost in four games, both after taking the first games. Mike Elford (1) took a game off World top 70 player Tim Vail and was close to taking a second as he lost 5/9 8/10 9/7 9/4. Gary Hales (3) was the only victor, winning in three straight games.
