New England Trip May 2003

Day 1  A Visit to the Old Home  Stowe, Vermont (below)  Ben & Jerry's

We found a covered bridge (above) and the Trapp Family Lodge (below).  They have a great view !!(right)  Of course, our first stop was Ben & Jerry's.

Day 2  We traveled down the river between Vermont and NH, across NH to York, Maine.  The ride was gorgeous!  We decided to head further north to visit the Lighthouse Depot.  We got carried away and ended up seeing quite a few lighthouses, before heading back to York Beach to spend the night.

The local monastery

Wood Island Light,

offshore Biddleford Pool

Cape Elizabeth Lights.

On the beach at the base of the hill, is the Lobster Shack.  We chose our lobsters.  They were cooked and served with coleslaw, fries, and terrific biscuits.  I ate the tail of mine and Sue ate hers and the rest of mine.  The tables overlooked the ocean and in nicer weather, you can eat at picnic tables on the beach.  It was the best dinner!

 Portland Head Light

From Portland Head, you can see the Cape Elizabeth Lights to the south (below) as well as two other lights in the Portland Harbor: Portland Breakwater (Bug) Light (right) and Spring Point Ledge Light (left).

Day 3

From our hotel door, you could see Been Island Light.  There was no sunrise - it was too cloudy. We headed to Cape Neddrick (Nubble) Lighthouse, the on down to Gloucester.  It was rainy and raw so we visited the Cape Anne Museum.  Taking the slow road to Foxwoods, we ended up in Norwich, CT for the night....after a terrific meal at the Middle of Nowhere Diner in Exeter.

Boon Island Light, offshore York

Across from Nubble we saw this little shack we thought we might like for a summer cottage!

Gloucester Light

Day 4

We headed off to Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center first thing.  This is a terrific museum - well worth a visit.  From there, we headed south to Newark Airport, where Sue flew back to Colorado.  It was a great road trip.
