The first annual Golden Gate's are now finished. For the past several weeks, the fans have voted on thier favorite player, teams and a whole lot of other catergories. Who were the big winners? No surprises here, the complete results can be found on our Golden Gate's page, but there are a few trends to talk about.
The big winners was anything related to them mens hockey team. They picked up 6 awards and 1 runner up. The football team had 2 awards, 1 runner up. Womens basketball- 1 award, 2 runners up, womens hockey and volleyball both had 1 award and 1 runner up. One big surprise might be the 5 runners up awards won by the womens soccer team.
Mens hockey winning everything isn't really a surprise. The mens hockey team is the best team we have at Colgate, and they also have one of the largest fan groups. There's a large fan contingency that comes to this site from US college hoceky online as well. Hockey has also dominated the discussions on the message board. Most of this sites most loyal followers are all hockey fans.
I like the way the Golden Gate's went off. I wish there was more discussion about each topic, but hopefully we'll do better next year. I also might divide all the awards into a mens and womens section. That might be a bit fairer and will allow more people to win something. I'll also try to finish a week earlier since after school ended, total voters really dropped off.
We also debated actually telling the athletes that they won. But since I don't really know most of them, and they have probally never heard of this site, we decided not to since I'm not sure how much the award will mean to them. But if you do know any of the winners, please pass along the information if you would like. Thanks to everyone who voted again, we'll see you next year.
