Early Season news and Patriot League Preview
The 1999 defending Patriot Leauge championships are looking to repeat! Last year the team went 11-3 and 5-0 in the league. Colgate has lost its star goalie, but is returning three players who made the all patriot league team last year. They will also have a new coach this season. In the preseason poll, Colgate was picked to finish second to Lafayette by just two votes. Colgate began the season with an impressive come from behind win over Hofstra. Then then lost to Conneticuit, Syracuse and Brown in OT. Early on, the teams biggest problem seems to be playing a full game and they seem to be getting off to slow starts. In the second half, Colgate has done very well and the team seems to be working together well. This should be a very exciting season.

April 8th - Holy Cross
Let's see, Colgate dominated, then fell apart a little, then dominated again. Colgate outexecuted the Crusaders. An excellent passing game for the Red Raiders, they just didn't give HC much of a chance. Midway through the 1st, Holy Cross had a rally going as Colgate could not stop thier go to player. Murray looked like she was having some trouble in net for the first time this season. Colgate played solidly though, and smashed Holy Cross after they regained the momentum. Kate Manzella broke a Colgate record by scoring 10 goals! Congradulations! Colgate wins 21-10 and takes the first league game of the season.

April 15th - Villanova
Colgate was in top form today! Kate Manzella scored 4 and assisted on 2 to lead the team. Liz Brown scored 4 and Heather Smith returned to the lineup and got 3. It was a all around good day for Colgate, strong offense, consistant and tenacious defense all game long, and a solid game everywhere else. Jane Murray stopped 11 to hold Villanova to an incredible 1 goal! Colgate trashes the Wildcats 16-1.

April 19th - At Bucknell

Anne Currier netter 5 and assisted on 1 to lead the Red Raiders. Liz Brown scored 3 and led the team with 3 assists. Another blowout for Colgate, who scored 12 in the first half alone. Jane Murray stopped 5 and let in 8 in goal. Another game where Colgate just got all the little things right and worked together well to win the game 19-8.

April 22nd - At Lafayette
This was the game that would decide the winner of the league title. Both teams played very hard and the momentum and lead swung back and forth all during the early part of the game. Colgate finally gained control and held a 10-6 lead. Colgate slid severly during the final part of the game, we gave up four in a row, scored on, then Lafayette tied again. Colgate only had 2 goals in the second half. It looked like Colgate would hold on and send the game to overtime, but the Leopards scored with just 8 seconds left to take the game and the League title away from Colgate. 11-12, the bad guys...

April 25th - Lehigh
Looks like its going to be another one of those games... Colgate pummeled Lehigh from start to finish. Anne Currier put in 3 goals and had 2 assists to lead the team in points, Liz Brown had 4 goals and some fine defensive play as well. For Lehigh, the problem seemed to be passing the ball downfield. Colgate did show weakness in the defensive zone and once again inability to stop the other teams top shooter. Colgate would only make 4 saves during the game, while Lehighs top scorer racked up 5 goals. Colgate punished them on offense though, a consistant 9 goals in the first and 8 in the second give Colgate a 17-7 win to close out the league schedule.

Season Review
Colgate closes out it's first season under new head coach Katrina Silva with a 7-5 record overall and a 4-1 Patriot League record, good for second place. They fell to Lafayette by one goal, which cost them the title. Leading the teams offense was senior Kate Manzella. She scored 43 times, including a Colgate record, 10 times in one game. She also led the team in caused turnovers and ground balls. For her efforts she was named the Patriot Leagues offensive player of the year. A total of 7 players were named all league first or second team. Colgate was an offensive powerhouse this year. In 6 out of 12 games, they scored 17 goals or higher. Colgate showed a lot of talent, and depth, even with a typical bence of about 3 players. We rarely had a weakness on the field. Sophomore Jane Murray showed her inexperience at times, but other times she was amazing. She was a defensive player of the week once, and the leagues goalie of the year. Colgate is losing some top seniors, but will be returning 4 of the leagues first or second team players and a lot of other great talent.
