Red Raider Sports Report
for 3/19/01
Once again, here we are... classes begin Monday, and the spring teams return from their trips, ready to get into the Patriot League part of their schedules in the second half of the semester. I was up in Canada, and among other things, saw 4 of our hockey players for next year, to read about it CLICK HERE.

The
Softball team played 16 games over break, going 8-8, 5 of those losses by just 1 run. Hitting seemed to be a problem later in the trip, the pitching staff averaged a 2.08 ERA over the trip. Beth Haas led all the pitchers with a 1.78 ERA, but only went 4-3 when the batters did not respond. Melissa Rawson led the team in hits with 18, Amanda Paolucci followed with 16, and freshman Rachel Smith had 13. Paolucci led the team in RBI's, while Rawson cracked 3 homers. The team has some more time to prepare for the league schedule. In two weekend, we host the Red Raider Invintational.

The
Womens Lacrosse team split their road trip, we had trouble with nationally recognized Hofstra and Ohio State. Last year we took a narrow win over Hofstra in the season opener, this year they walked all over us to the tune of 18-4. We had narrow wins over Columbia and Ohio on the road, before losing a closer game to Ohio State. The leading scorers right now are Liz Brown, with 10, Jane Manning at 6, and Heather Smith with 4. It's hard to tell where we stand right now compared to last year. I think we are a younger team than last year. So these games against quality opponents will be good later on, aside from Hofstra, we were competitive in all 4 games. First home game is this friday at 4.

The
Mens Lacrosse team fell to 0-5, after its most recent loss to UVM. The 13-12 loss comes just two years after we spanked then 12-5. However, this was a much better Catamounts team. We also lost to Yale earlier in the week. Things aren't looking great, but the team has not showed signs of giving up. They have a strong and talented senior class, who is leading the team, and then a bunch of inexpereinced players. The seniors have kept the team on task, and working throughout the game. So there's no reason not to believe it won't get better, especially with a tough preseason schedule to lead into league play.

And yes, it is time to start the spring home games! The first game is the womens lacrosse team vs the Bison of
Bucknell. Bucknell was picked to finish 4th in the preseason poll and is currently 1-3. That game is friday at 4 pm.
Saturday at 1 pm, the mens lacrosse team against
Army. Last year marked the first time we beat the Cadets in nearly 80 years! Can we go for two in a row? Army is just 1-3, and 1-2 in the league. Army has been picked to finish 2nd in the league. Tylers Field is an absolutly great place to watch a game. The bleachers offer a nice view of the field, and the crowd is usually pretty nice. The hill on the other side of the field is great too. You can sit right on the turf, or on the little hill and just kick back, relax, and enjoy the student atmosphere. As the spring rolls in, its a great place to be.

Thats it for now, more episodes of ECAC Survivor are on the way, there is one more hockey article nearly done. And I am hoping to have the Golden Gates ballots out by the start of next week!
