Red Raider Sports Report
for 1/8/01
The Womens Basketball team is in for a tough challenge on Tuesday. They meet the leagues dominant team, Holy Cross, on the road. Colgate has beaten Holy Cross just once in 22 tries. The Red Raider's are sitting on a 7 game losing streak, while Holy Cross has not lost a home league game since 1994. Holy Cross brought back athletic scholarships three years ago. Never the less, look for a loud Colgate contingent at the game. I'm making the trip as well as several other students, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of our Massachusets fans show up for this game, which will be on TV.

The
Mens Basketball team will battle Holy Cross the next night. The Red Raider's show a lot of promise, but have not been delivering in recent games, in fact, they have been doing fairly badly. But they had a week to prepare for the league opener, and they meet one of the league favorites on thier home court to kick it off. Pat Campolieta reached a career milestone, scoring his 1,000th career point against Cornell. This feat was first accomplished by Bill Dodd '53, and was most recently completed by Seth Schaeffer '98.

Hats off to
Heather Murphy, literally! The Womens Hockey star recorded not one, but two hat tricks this weekend, as the Red Raiders shelled Trinity and Amherst. They move on to face number 8 in the nation, Vermont, this weekend, then they do battle with RPI. Colgate is currently 3rd in the national rankings. We are just 11th in the Pair wise rankings.

And the
Mens Hockey team picked up thier 4th victory of the season over Mercyhurst. Good goaltending bu MU kept things close, and penalties gave us a chance to lose. Kyle Doyle got things started and finished. He scored just 25 seconds into the game, then again on an empty net at the end to put things away for the Red Raiders. Unfortunatly, he allowed himself to be instigated into taking a penalty or two. It's good to see your players not take any crap, but sometimes, thats not the best idea. It's time to return to league action, as we take on both Dartmouth, and UVM this weekend. The 40 nominees for the Hobey Baker award are out. And no Colgate player has made the list. This is a major insult to Cory Murphy, who was all rookie as a freshman, honorable mention ECAC that year, all league last season, and one of the best defensemen in the league this year.

Looking ahead to
Mens Lacrosse, the league was very well represented in a national preseason poll. Hobart was picked to finish 14th. And Army, Bucknell and Lehigh were all ranked between 24 and 31.

Here's a quick look at the movies. If you ever see the hockey classic "
Slapshot", keep an eye out for the first road game. Have a close look at the arena, recognize it? It's our own Starr rink! Back before the renovations. It's not a long scene, but you can definitly make out the home of the Red Raiders. Also, speaking of Mens Lacrosse. If you rent the recent hit, "American Pie", and watch the scene at the championship lacrosse game, one of the main charachters, Ox, gets flattened by his opponent. Now of course, the actor needed a stuntman to take the hit, so they got a Colgate lacrosse alum to stand in for him! Now unfortunatly, the shot never went quite right, so he had to take the hit many, many times. But hey, it was an exciting moment.

Thats it for now, the next report will be on Thursday or Friday, and among other things, will include highlights of an e-mail I got from a person I believe to be the Dartmouth goalie. The current fanpoll asks about which hockey weekend are you looking foward to the most. In the past fanpoll, the game against Michigan was voted as the most memorable moment of the fall semester. Have a good week, see you at the Holy Cross game Tuesday!
