My Favorite Color

I have never seen the ocean
Yet I know it is blue
I know this from television and pictures
And the words of poets and sailors
Even from the sounds I have heard

What a wonderful color
Not just to see but to feel
To me it does not mean sadness
The ocean is blue

It is said that whales reached the land
Only to return to the open sea
Not to stay under the waves
They come up for air
For the sky is also blue

Full of life and motion
A deceptive body of water
Vast in expanse
Hiding a torrent of beauty and rage

The yellow sun boils the surface
Fiery red lava twists the floor
Between live predators and prey
In spite of the chaos, nature is in order

Dutifully giving life
Mindlessly washing away history
Sometimes not enough
Others too much

Its power and range
From a tear to a deluge
The break of dawn to the day's farewell
Always blue
