Roswell a hit with family-oriented critics At the beginning of the season, TV Guide picked it's Best New Shows. Only two of the five remain: Roswell and fellow WBer Angel. (Predicition: With Angel being a ratings powerhouse, Roswell is a good candidate for the next 'The Best Show on Television You're Not Watching' award. TV Guide doesn't give up on a show easily.) We know the rest of the story: low ratings, time-slot and day change, bigger ratings. While critics from all backgrounds have given Roswell plenty of luv, it's the overlooked, often derided family programming critic that gives Roswell it's best due. The Parents Television Council, headed by longtime entertainer Steve Allen, ranked Roswell as one of the top ten network programs for 1999/2000. PTC gives Roswell a green light for family viewing. It notes that Roswell provides "entertainment for adolescents without resorting to sexually charged plots." "Heatwave" and "Sexual Healing" are tame compared to some content on Buffy and other teen-oriented shows. While The Media Research Center deals with both news and entertainment programs, it also houses columns written by L. Brent Bozell III, a nationally syndicated critic. Mr. Bozell has spoken favorably of Roswell and bemoans that "[t]he critics didn't care" about the quality and standards of our favorite show. Sadly, Viewers for Quality Television seems to be unaware of Roswell's existance. With the new season not too far away, hopefully more reviewers and viewers will discover that Roswell is not some teen show, or some scifi show, but a rare program that can appeal to any age or taste because it speaks to the heart. |
