Paintings
"Every artist was first an amateur."
(Ralph Waldo Emerson)
Painting is just another way of keeping a diary.
(Pablo Picasso)
These are my interpretations of some of  Vincent van Gogh's paintings.  I painted them from post cards after seeing the Van Gogh / Gaugain exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago.
See how they compare with the originals below:

This is my recollection of a picture from a story book I had as a child.  I began painting a few years ago because this image popped in my mind and I felt an intense need to record it.

"You do not know how paralyzing that staring at a blank canvas is;
it says to the painter ---
You can't do anything! ---
The canvas stares at you like an idiot, and it hypnotizes some painters,
so that they themselves become idiots.
Many painters are afraid of the blank canvas,
but the blank canvas is afraid of the really passionate painter who is daring,
and who has once and for all broken the spell of
YOU CANNOT."
(Vincent van Gogh, letter to his brother)
