Witimka County

In the middle of God's Country

Our wonderful little county sits in the far northeastern part of the state, you know that little corner in the upper right portion of the map that is always left off because it does not fit very well on a square map. We are an oft forgotten county and that is one of the biggest charms of Witimka.

Witimka is bordered on the west by the river and on all of our landlocked sides we are surrounded by Salisbury County. The county is generally forested with several small farms cut into the forest. The highest point in the county is the Cleburn Peak which is about 600 feet above the rest of the county. The largest lake in Witimka is Rustler Lake. Of course we have a couple of smaller lakes and stock ponds. The most famous of these is Ol' Man Johnson's Pond.

The Atchison, Marietta and Memphis Railroad bisects the county. The interstate completely misses us. We have no airports and Greyhound only stops here once a week. Our river landings are stately, for river landings, having just been rebuilt after a recent bond election. We are a nice quiet little county.

Our population is around 10,000 souls, most of them farmfolk. About 6500 or so are Caucasian and most of the rest are Negro. We have a smattering of Hispanic and Asiatic folk around too. We live in peaceful harmony with one another, though every once in a while we have been known to get a little to rowdy on a Saturday night.

Our economy is mostly centred on farming and we do have a large sawmill which provides many jobs for our community.

The Methodist Baptist Church of Christ is a major gathering place for our community.

Below are some links to some vignettes about our fair county which will provide a view of what our county is like. We take great pride in our community, we hope you enjoy your visit.
