Doppelganger

Celluloid seed sprouting envy in the pit of utopia,

eidolon cherishing deception, tree of delusion,

the screen from which what I want but never will become

steps onto land and summons with voice of regret.

“Follow and find payment for all the wrongs done you:

the destiny that genes dealt from a stacked deck,

the debauched father whose sins were his father’s,

the empire that drips blood into your suppliant hands.”

The mosquito lays no worm in the aorta more vile

than the chancre that resentment extracts from the human will.

I’d steal an eye from another’s face to supplant

the one I ripped from my own grieving socket.

My hero, my sickness, my demon desire–celluloid dream,

it is my envy for what the world will not bring that draws

me to your Jerusalem. For I lodged my bullet in the stump

at the base of Ararat and found the ark emptied of love.

Sweet embrace of cherished deception, music of envy,

your ideals will lead the nation from the inferno of slavery

to the land of public opinion. All praise and hallowed

be thy name; may the end be soon and end our doubt.
