William Shakespeare

Human development is a life long process. Shakespeare calls this the 7 Ages of Man. We are interfering with this natural human development by exposing mere children to virtual lives of sex and violence. Even our news and talk shows are loaded. Children have the right to innocence, for it is during this time that they wonder at the world around them and make their own discoveries about how it all works.

The Seven Ages of Man

Jaques:

All the world's a stage,
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
And one man in his time plays many parts,
His acts being seven ages.

At first the infant, (birth to 10)
Mewling and puking in the nurse's arms;

Then the whining school-boy, with his satchel (10 to 20)
And shining morning face, creeping like snail
Unwillingly to school.

And then the lover, (20 to 30)
Sighing like furnace, with a woeful ballad
Made to his mistress' eyebrow.

Then a soldier, (30 to 40)
Full of strange oaths, and bearded like the pard,
Jealous in honour, sudden and quick in quarrel,
Seeking the bubble reputation
Even in the cannon's mouth.

And then the justice, (40 to 50)
In fair round belly with good capon lin'd,
With eyes severe and beard of formal cut,
Full of wise saws and modern instances;
And so he plays his part.

The sixth age shifts (50 to 60)
Into the lean and slipper'd pantaloon,
With spectacles on nose and pouch on side;
His youthful hose, well sav'd, a world too wide
For his shrunk shank; and his big manly voice,
Turning again toward childish treble, pipes
And whistles in his sound.

Last scene of all, (60 to 70)
That ends this strange eventful history,
Is second childishness and mere oblivion;
Sans teeth, sans eyes, sans taste, sans everything.
This has been represented in art many times.

When I first came into the computer industry, it was the 30 something crowd like Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer who were warring with the very people like Steve Jobs who they were good buddies with just a few years earlier. Watching Microsoft, now in their 40s and detemined to get Justice, fighting an older federal judge was really kind of funny. I just couldn't believe how accurate most of this was. I've had major problems with Bill Gates Sr. who acts childish and oblivious to the chaos he is creating as he goes through his last scene with his lovely Mimi...

Oh yes, I kept saying to myself. I'm definitely an Alice in a hole. NO matter how you want to break down human development, there are these stages, even for myself. When there is a major difference in age between people it can be a bit sticky to deal with.

I am very grateful to have a classical education that helped me make these kinds of connections or I might also be going insane.
