Conic Lampshade
by Jeannifer Arnaiz

I. Objectives:

- to be able to make a lampshade using recycled materials
- to be able to put conic sections to practical use, particularly the circle and the ellipse
- to be able to make calculus more fun and applicable to everyday living

II. Description:

The lampshade is fairly short and easy to bring around. It is handy and light, making it more appealing. The stand is in a form of a tripod, with the bulb in the top of the stand. Its cover is made of a blue recycled paper with embossed stars. The cover is shaped like a cone, with circles and ellipses cut out of it. When it is lighted, the lampshade's reflection in a dark room is in the shape of circles and ellipses on the walls.

III. Materials:

- recycled or excess paper, bulb, bulb-socket plug pliers, scissors or cutter, mighty bond
- 1 piece, thin metal wire, 5 inches
- 3 pieces, thick metal wires, 8 inches each

IV. Procedure:

First, twist the 3 thick wires to shape them. Then, glue the bulb socket with the wire onto the middle of the three wires. Then, twist the thinner wire around the three wires in order to hold them together. Then, using the cutter, cut the recycled paper in a size that fits appropriately with the wires' measurements. Bore holes onto the recycled paper in the shape of the ellipses and circles. Make sure that the lampshade stand has wires that will hold the lampshade cover up so as not to make it slip or fall down. Additional designs on the lampshade are optional, because the paper used to make its cover is already designed.

V. Applications/Uses:

This project may be used at home, in school or in the office. It is very handy, making it easy to carry or to transport to and from places. It is also cheap and easy to make, so that additional expenses incurred by purchasing a lampshade in shops like Tickles and the like, will be avoided.

VI. Reference:

This project was an adaptation of the revolving or rotating lampshade seen in Tickles shops. It, however, does not revolve. This a personal concept, as far as the idea is concerned. This is because the concept is considered to be cheap, as well as it is useful.
