The "CHiPs" Fiesta
During the late 1970's & early 1980's I can remember sitting in front of the telly on a Saturday evening, waiting for Dicky Davis to stop talking about the football results on ITV's World of Sport so that CHiPs could start.
CHiPs was an American programme about John & Ponch, two Californian Highway Patrol motorcyclists, & it generally involved a big pile up at a ridiculously slow speed on a very busy freeway. As a kid I never really took much notice of the surrounding traffic, my eyes drawn to the ensuing carnage.
These days with the "benefit" of Sky satelite telly it's possible to relive your childhood viewing. CHiPs is no exception & is currently (Oct 2003) being aired on Bravo at least twice a day.
Being a confirmed Fiesta anorak I have noticed a Mk1 Fiesta on the freeway or in the area of the days carnage on several occasions. The Mk1 was exported to America until 1980.Known as the "federal" Fiesta the car used a 1600cc OHV kent engine producing only 66 bhp due to the tough emission laws over there. The car also used the same headlights later used on the European XR2.
The same car seems to have been used in the the series because it was always bright yellow & featured "sport" stripes. I have finally managed to "catch" the car.The quality is poor because I had to take a digital photo of it off a paused telly video picture.
Californian crash regulations insisted that cars had "5 mph impact" bumpers, hence the chrome girders inflicted on the small Ford. The front grille also differed from the European item.instead of the oval moulding in the centre with the badge fixed to it the US car had grille slats with no oval moulding & FORD in chrome lettering near the lefthand headlight. These grilles are highly sought in the UK by owners wishing to make their cars look different to the usual British fare.
